On-Campus Kosher Dining

Kosher Dining - Dutch Quad

Ever since the 1970's the University at Albany offers this Kosher Dining option in the Dutch Quad Cafeteria. A meat kitchen for all-you-can-eat Lunch and Dinner 6 days a week, for students on the Kosher Meal plan, as well as visitors who can purchase a meal at the cashier. It is supervised and certified by the Vaad HaKashruth of the Capital District.

Parents: please note that while the current weekly plan is for 15 meals a week, students rarely eat more than that many meals in the cafeteria (not everyone's up for breakfast each day, and since Shabbat and Holidays are at Shabbos House and some even come to Shabbos House for Tuesday Night Learning, those meals are taken care of.)

Students: if you are not on the Kosher Meal Plan, note that you can add a dollar to your regular meal-swipe and eat a meal at Kosher. Plus, you can do so with friends who are not eating Kosher for while the serving lines are separate, the dining area is shared with the non-Kosher Dutch diners.

Dutch Dining is also open to the general community. Call the Dutch Manager's Office at 442-5978 for info, rsvp etc.

Dreidels Cafe - Campus Center

In the early 00's Dining Services opening a Kosher Bagel Cafe in the Campus Center, and breakfast can be individually purchased or a meal-swipe used. As with the Dutch Kosher, it is certified Kosher by the Vaad HaKashruth of the Capital District.

Shabbos and Holiday Meals

Friday Night Dinners alternate between Shabbos House and Hillel. There is no charge for students to attend. Hillel dinners are held at Campus Center and are paid by the Hilllel Student group from their Student Association allocation from the student activity fee budget and subsidized by contributions to UAlbany Hillel. Shabbos House dinners are supported by contributions from parents, alumni, and friends etc.

All Shabbat Lunches (and 3rd Meal when applicable) and all Holiday (Sukkot, Passover etc, excluding the intermediate days) Dinners and Lunches are held at Shabbos House, as above. Unless specifically noted, RSVP is not necessary for Shabbos House or Hillel meals.

Off-Campus Albany Area Kosher Food Availability

(Kosher) Price Chopper Colonie NY (a northern-western suburb of Albany NY, in Albany County).

Located just west of the juncture of Routes 5 (Central Ave) and 155 (New Karner Road), the Colonie Price Chopper (open 24 hours) offers a wide variety of Kosher products, as well as a full-service (only open during business hours) Kosher Meat Department and Deli. Call (518) 456-2970 for any special orders.

Best way to get there from UAlbany: Leaving Collins Circle go left on Washington Ave until you hit Route 155 - New Karner Road (a green water tower will loom ahead on left). Turn right on 155, and take it to Route 5 (Central Ave). Turn left on Rt 5, and make your next left into Colonie Plaza. Price Chopper will be straight ahead. (Or you can cut through Kmart's parking lot from the 155..)

At this time there are no other Kosher certified restaurants or eateries in the Albany area. Many remember Chabad's Pizza Shop on Washington Ave, and later Goldberg's Bagels near Exit 23.. but both of these have since closed.
