COZY SHABBAT
I'M IN ALBANY FOR THE SUMMER. WHAT'S UP FOR SHABBAT?
Cozy Shabbat is Shabbos House's summer special. These summer weekends have a
close-knit-feel, around one-joined-table, with great conversations. While we
love having a packed house with so many students celebrating during the
academic year, Cozy Shabbat summer weekends have their own special charm.
IS THERE COZY SHABBAT EVERY WEEK?
Usually about half the summer weekends. Be sure to check the
Schedule Page for the full summer schedule of
Cozy Shabbat (and some BBQ's). We update the summer Cozy Shabbat schedule
every few weeks as we figure out our own schedule. Since it's a much smaller
Shabbat, RSVP's are appreciated:

WEEKLY TABLE QUESTION
One of our summer customs is to pose a
question and then go around the table and hear everyone's thoughts or
experiences. Topics range from an inspiring experience that week, to a
humorous experience, or maybe an issue related to the Torah portion. It's
great to hear a little something short from everyone around the table.
SHALOM MCKOWNVILLE NEIGHBORS
Another Cozy Shabbat difference, is that we invite neighbors to join us to
get a sense of what Shabbat is like inside Shabbos House. McKownville is the
neighborhood that is adjacent to campus on it's south-western side. Shabbos
House is located in McKownville which is part of Guilderland.
WILL THERE BE A MINYAN?
Probably not. Most students
are away in the summer and winter break months, so it isn't likely. But it
has happened! Now and then we have guests, travelers, or additional students
are up here for the weekend. The next closest Minyan is at Shomray Torah (Shteeble)
at 463 New Scotland Avenue (2 blocks east of St. Peter's Hospital) and
that's about 4 miles south-east of campus.
SO ARE THERE PRAYER SERVICES?
Informal. Prior to Dinner and prior to Lunch we pray together - whoever is
here. We still sing, and say the prayers but skip those parts only said with
a regular Minyan (i.e. Kaddish, Barchu, Kedusha, Torah Reading etc)...
WHO PAYS FOR IT?
Shabbos House Dinners (etc..) are only possible because of the generous
contributions of Parents, Alumni, Students and Friends. It is thanks to so
many friends with large and small contributions that Shabbos House can do
what it does. There is no funding from the University or National Chabad.
While during the regular season, Shabbos House dinners receive some partial
funding from UAlbany Hillel, and occasionally from the L'chaim and Tagar
Student Groups, this does not apply during the summer months. See "Funding
Page" and the "Sponsors Page"
for additional info.
