Mendel's note: 2 students went from Shabbos House on last year's inaugural ISRAELINKS trip and had an incredible time and a rich experience. There was even some thought that we would chaperone the trip this year, but we're unable to do it, but are excited about the staff going - colleagues of ours that we know to be great folks to do this with.

1 Week in Appalachia A Jewish Summer Break for Jewish College Women, this year held at the Capital Retreat Center in the Appalachian Mountains, 1 1/2 hours from Washington DC. Activities include hiking on the trail, ropes courses, swimming and boating in a breathtaking scenic location, away from it all.

The program is for women only, and is for one-week only May 29 thru June 5, and full-scholarships (aside for travel) are available to those who apply before April 29, 2008.

The study sessions are led by:

  • Rabbi Manis Friedman, a brilliant Chassidic scholar, and lecturer on relationships and matters of soul, author of "Doesn't anyone blush anymore?" and a wonderful series of tapes that Rabbi Mendel really enjoyed
  • Rivka Slonim, co-director of the well-known Chabad Center at Binghampton University and author and editor of books on Jewish femininity, and a mentor to Raizy in the Chabad on Campus universe
  • Miriam Lipskier, co-director of Chabad at Emory, she's entertaining, humorous and a lot of fun...

ILTSE(P) ILTSE is formerly named ILTSP (The Ivy League Torah Summer Program) in the north-eastern Catskill Mountains, about an hour and half south-west of Albany, and about 2 hour plus from NYC. They've been doing this program for a long time, maybe 25 years now.

Program, room and board is all free - participants receive a stipend of $1,000 to $1,800 for 5 weeks of study and genuine immersion experiences. Very good daily instructors and some excellent visiting lecturers. Student body is small, so there's plenty of group discussion, one-on-one learning and personal input by all participants.

It is only open to those without a formal background in full-time Jewish learning. There are separate mens and womens programs, both study similar curricula, but the facilities are about 10 minutes apart in the scenic Catskill Mountains.

Mendel's Note: We lived on the program premises and taught at this program for seven consecutive summers, and understand this program well. If you are a good fit for this, it is an excellent way to gain skills, learning, awareness and an overall enriching experience. They are an understand place that will work with you at your level. Plus, they pay you!

Belzberg Summer Fellowship @ Mayanot The Belzberg Fellowship is a unique opportunity to delve into Jewish thought in an intimate and intellectually stimulating environment at the Mayanot Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Belzberg Fellows enjoy the same rigorous and open approach that characterizes all Mayanot programs. Courses will be conducted by Mayanot full-time staff and rabbis, who have years of experience teaching beginners the fundamentals of Jewish learning.

For six weeks, set in the heart of Jerusalem, the Mayanot campus is a few minutes' walk from the Western Wall. There is no better place to experience Jewish life in the 21st century, and to explore one's own sense of Judaism.

Textual studies will be complemented by weekly excursions, each one reflecting a different aspect of Jewish history and Israel. In addition to jeep tours, hikes and other active day-trips, there is an exciting and spiritual program for each Shabbat. Fellows will reside in the student residence and have open access to Mayanot facilities, including an extensive library, study areas, gardens and social areas.

Thanks to the generosity of Marc and Chantal Belzberg, the Fellowship covers all expenses in Israel, including tuition and room and board. There is a small number of grants for round-trip airfare to Israel available, for students that don't have the means.

Mayanot Birthright-Israel Most Birthrights go to the same places and do much of the same things, as there is a standard that all birthright providers must keep to. But Mayanot has a unique flavor, each bus is staffed by couples who run places like Shabbos House (Chabad Houses on campuses all over the country) and just like Shabbos House, not everyone on the bus is observant (understatement). It is one of the largest birthright-israel providers, with expertise and professionalism. Check it out...

Mendel and Raizy haven't staffed a birthright trip yet, there are all kinds of reasons why, but we have heard marvelous feedback from students and alumni who have been on the Mayanot trips.

Please feel free to contact Mendel and Raizy 438-4227 or email: mail@shabboshouse.com to discuss any of the above programs, and how they'd be a fit for you.
