Journal and Registry in preparation for Sept 13th... Sunday, September 13th will, G-d willing, be the official opening day and dedication ceremonies titled "Sweet Beginnings" for the new Shabbos House - Rohr Chabad Jewish Student Center. The day is getting closer. Crews are working on the hardwood floor in the main room, on the 2nd color of wallpaper there, on tiles in the bathroom and much more.

In preparation we're working on a souvenir journal to be printed in honor of this historic milestone event, and anyone wishing to participate with an ad or greeting can do so prior to 9/3 or 9/4. For additional details, see the Sweet Beginnings Page.

We've also opened an online Shabbos House registry at MyRegistry.com - and are slowly adding kitchen equipment, accessories and other items to furnish and accessorize the new Shabbos House. Thanks to those who already purchased a professional series Kitchen-Aid, 2 hot-water urns, and other gifts. We will continue to update this registry, as time goes on.

The event program is still in formation and tentative. Updates will be posted to the "Sweet Beginnings" page.

New Mechitzas That's right. No more tug-of-war or yanking and unwinding the Mechitzah cord and panels. At first we thought of putting a Mechitzah curtain on a track, but we scrapped that idea, realizing that it would mean a floor-to-ceiling Mechitzah and even if we'd have part of it lace, it might look too hospital-like. Then we came up with room dividers, the folding kind - but were thinking of mounting them on wood and wheels. We looked high and low for appropriate panels that would complement the room decor, and serve the purpose, but didn't have much luck. Then Rabbi Shmuly (Mendel's brother from Chabad serving Union College in Schenectady) called from Lowe's, about a huge sale on outdoor privacy screens, and we went and bought them out on the spot. We're still not sure if we'll be mounting them or not, but we do have them now.

Leadership, Move-in, Last Week in August Together with the faith groups at Chapel House, UAlbany Hillel hosted a leadership training seminar on Tuesday 8/26 for leaders of the student groups. The Jewish groups also came for pita and felafel lunch at Shabbos House and a Torah study with Rabbi Mendel discussing five aspects of leadership qualities.

Wednesday and Thursday were freshmen move-in days at Indian and State Quads. Quite a few Empire Commons folks started to move in as well. Classes begin on Monday, August 31st.

The Daily Vote! Help us stay up there... http://www.jewishcommunityheroes.org/nominees/profile/rabbi-mendel-raizy-rubin/ We've been trying not to obsess over the hero voting thing, but it can be addictive. Thanks to all who have been voting for us once da day, keeping us in the top ten, actually top five nationwide (may we be able to stay up there!). Please share the word with friends, the more daily votes we can get up until October 8th, the better chances we have. To find the vote simply google: Raizy Hero - or visit this link (once per day, you can even do it every 12 hours, but we don't want to make people crazy...).
Shalom Festival in Saratoga
8/23/09
Each year Rabbi Mendel's brother, Rabbi Abba and Saratoga Chabad puts on the "Shalom Festival" in Saratoga's historic and beautiful Congress Park. This year Mushky and Chani pitched in to run the edible sand-art and jewelry-making activity booths. We also had amazing caricatures done of the kids by Phil Singer. We all enjoyed felafel, hotdogs and lively music by Yoel Sharbi, and the kids watched Incredible Larry's juggling show. One of the best booths was "A Nickle a Pickle" with half-sour and garlic-dill Kosher pickle tasting.
Thoughts of Packing... It hasn't settled in yet, but we have to give some thought to packing and moving over to 320. We still don't have a definite date when we can start bringing stuff over there (at least to the upstairs portion which is being finished first) but hope it will be sometime early September. The kids have begun putting away clothing they don't need for right now, sorting it in piles and clear bags, and perhaps we'll move those first. We're still waiting on carpet and light fixture installation in the upstairs rooms.
Planning for the new semester... This year the honey-prescription bottles are coming back for a pre-Rosh-Hashanag giveaway (and as a giveaway for the Sweet Beginnings event...) so we're working on the prescription label, and ordering the vials and caps. Also the L'chaim Board came up with a "Mad Science" themed Shabbat with a distinguished professor of science at this University, and we got him to agree to the first weekend in November. The new Shabbos House business cards with the candle-lighting times on back are now ready, and we have the Torah-Tuesday bookmark with the Fall 2009 listing of classes and topics. We're also adding "TorahTRAX" where students can choose their learning adventure, by getting 3+ students to find a time and topic that works for all of them, and Mendel or Raizy will study it with them once a week for five weeks. If you're interested in TorahTRAX give us a call/email. (438-4227 / mail@shabboshouse.com)
The Rosh Hashanah Question UAlbany always give off for Rosh Hashanah (Yom Kippur, and first days of Passover) but this year, the Jewish New Year falls on Saturday and Sunday, so there are no full-days off. Most students interesting in a high holiday service will probably headed home to spend it with family, but we'd imagine quite a few may stay up here. Most years, Hillel and Shabbos House arrange local synagogues for these students, but perhaps this year, if there is enough interest, we can host a traditional, meaningful yet student-friendly services at Shabbos House. Please let us know if you would be interested in this, so we can figure out the best arrangements.
The Teaneck BBQ and NY Trip Thanks to Dan and Jenni Levy for hosting the BBQ at their home in Teaneck. We met several alumni from the early 90's before our times at Shabbos House (we started in 1997) and also spent some quality time with alumni friends from our first years here in the late 1990's. Altogether, the fund raised were more than a "share" in the new Shabbos House, and we thank all for participating.

After Teaneck we drove to NY to spend some time with Raizy's sister Sara who is laid up with a leg cast. We also went around to several shops in NY to purchase items for the new house, including Mezuzot.

Looking forward to the Levys in Teaneck BBQ Now that Shabbos is over, we're packing up and preparing to head down to Teaneck for Sunday, many thanks to the Levy's for hosting this BBQ event (open to parents, students, alumni and all Shabbos House friends) and possibly stay in Brooklyn to visit Raizy sister Sarah who's in a leg cast. May she have a speedy and complete recovery.
Last Cozy-Shabbat for Summer 2009
8/14-15/09
We've had quite a few Cozy-Shabbat weekends this summer, and we're happy to have concluded the season with a beautiful Shabbat. Special guests included Jason ('05) and his fiance Chavi, Rachel W. (who returned from a Hebrew total immersion program in Vermont in preparation for his masters program this Fall at Brandeis) with her parents, Ilana and her mom (Ilana was here for a semester and is likely returning to Brandeis for the Fall semester). We also had Mendel's brother, Rabbi Yossi and Leah Rubin of Clifton Park Chabad and their kids (who had a great time with our kids). There were six tables - quite a crowd for a Cozy-Shabbat Friday Night!

Family Outing to Altamont Fair
8/13/09
While there are a million and one things to do before the start of the new year, and to catch up on paperwork, and prepare for the opening of the new Shabbos House - a big item on our to-do list is to enjoy quality time with the kids. So on Thursday, the one day this week without rain in the forecast, we went to the Altamont Fair (a 3-county fair) continuing a 12 year tradition since our arrival at Shabbos House in 1997. This year the kids especially enjoyed the Zoppe Circus, the car-drop by the Fire Department, the birth of a calf, and a 1913 Schenectady Ketuba in one of the historic museums. We also chatted with a blacksmith at work, ate our home-brought Kosher supper on a picnic table behind one of those "Fried Dough" vendors, and met some Guilderland neighbors. We even saw a parrot sitting on a bench between two people in conversation. This year we didn't spend as much time in the animal barns or exhibits.
Wow - in top 10 in under 24 hours...
8/13/09
Thanks to the many friends who voted and helped spread the word - we reached the top 10 on the leaderboard in less than 24 hours! We hope we can continue the momentum to stay up there! Anyone can vote (so spread the word) it's once-per-day until the beginning of October. One vote a day can keep us up there! http://www.jewishcommunityheroes.org/nominees/profile/rabbi-mendel-raizy-rubin/

Guess who is #2 on the leaderboard (as of this writing?) Rabbi Chaim Lazaroff, our brother-in-law, of Chabad in Houston Texas - who stepped up to the plate and helped out with the many who ended up in Houston during Hurricane Katrina! Go Chaim, Go!

Picking a stain...
8/13/09
We have the July Building pictures up on the 320 Building Blog, for a while now, but sorry - no August photos yet. We hope to get them up by mid next week. Here's a mini-update: all the wallpaper is in on the upper level, and most of the hallways and lobbies. The main room is scheduled to get primed and painted starting this coming Monday (Aug 17). The tiles are now being laid in the main floor lobbies. The kitchen's already have most of the tile backsplash installed and the appliances are starting to go in. Today we experimented with a range of wood stains, to figure out a good color for the main room wood trim.

We've been nominated.. please vote.. and vote again! A good alumni friend nominated Mendel and Raizy for the UJC United Jewish Communities "Heroes Award" for which the national finalists receive $25,000 toward the charity of their choice. Basically, the more people who vote for us, the better chance we have! The neat thing is that you can vote once each day - so if we spread the word (and our friends in turn spread the word...) and people keep voting... who knows! http://www.jewishcommunityheroes.org/nominees/profile/rabbi-mendel-raizy-rubin/  try it!
Leather Couch Class 2009 Gift The Class of 2009 gave us a stack of VISA vanilla gift-cards for a new furniture item in the new house and the word leaked that they were especially interested in a new leather couch. After much shopping, looking around, and sitting on different couches, we finally found one that feels great (kid tested, Mendel and Raizy approved), looks great, and was reasonably priced. It's on order and should be in place in the new upstairs library room (which has the bay windows facing Fuller Road) before the September 13th opening. Thank you to the Class of 2009!
All the Kids are home again While we were away at the alumni weddings, Mushky and Chani came home from three weeks at the Jewish Girls Retreat based in Troy NY. They had a marvelous summer. Now all the kids are back home together. It'll be a hectic time from here to the start of the Fall 2009 semester, but we'll have to do some fun stuff with the kids as well. They need it! And - hopefully soon enough we'll start packing to move 2 doors down to the new Shabbos House (moving date is not finalized yet).
Two Alumni Weddings in One Day
8/9/09
On Sunday, August 9th, Raizy, Mendel and baby Bluma traveled down to Manhattan Beach to Rachel Commer's ('00) wedding to Yehudah Gass of Omaha. It was a beautiful, lively and delicious Simcha. Part of the wedding "shtick" was cowboy hats during the dancing, for a Western-twist. We sat with Albany alumni, and a high-ranking (and Orthodox) US Air-Force officer. Interesting thing - the officiating Rabbi Jonathan Gross of Omaha was once at Shabbos House for a weekend (with visiting YU Rabbinical students) and he remembered the experience well, despite it being about a decade ago. And we remembered him, too! Before the end of that wedding, we had to leave early to drive down to Lakewood NJ for the wedding of Yosef (Joe) Joralemon to Naami Kogos of Boston. There were many Rabbis and Roshei Yeshiva present at the wedding and it was quite an honor to be included in part of the ceremonies. Unfortunately, it was a evening wedding and we had to leave early (as it is we ended up getting home at 2am) but it was so exciting to see Yosef so happy with his Kallah. May we always share Simchas, joyous occasion and good news.
"Sweet Beginnings" Postcard Invite Time is running out on us - before you know it the new semester begins, and soon after that will be the September 13th opening date for the new Shabbos House!  We mailed out a postcard invite (to be as economical as possible) which should reach homes in the 2nd week of August. We're now working on a special souvenir journal which will include ads and greetings, and setting up some registries with retailers for those who wish to purchase items to outfit the new, bigger and better Shabbos House. Please visit our "sweet beginnings" page which will be updated with additional info as it becomes available.
2 Days in Lake George's Harris Bay

This summer has been filling up with lots of work, between stuff for the building, the Cozy-Shabbat weekends, catching up on paperwork from Spring '09, the reunion, traveling for Simchas -- and we really needed a little break. Luckily, just as we were pondering the need to get away somewhere, a community friend told us that they were headed elsewhere for the week, and they were happy to allow us use of their home on Lake George's Harris Bay (northeast of the tourist-heavy Lake George Village). The hosts are very aware of Kosher and Jewish customs and made it so easy for us to feel right at home. Their house is a few houses in from the Harris Bay portion of the lake, and we had a very relaxing and enjoyable time up there. The first day it rained heavily so we took the kids to an arcade on Canada Street (there are several) and when it cleared we took a stroll in the crisp summer air near the lake down in the Village. On the second day we drove up Prospect Mountain, stopping and enjoying each overlook (and of course taking lots of photos). We also went to a Nature Preserve in Bolton Landing - and Moshe and Mendel attended the Lake George Minyan run by Saratoga Chabad in a white tent behind the Magic Forest on Bloody Pond Road. Plus we spent quality time down by the water in Harris Bay. We brought all food from home, and so we were able to have a fun and memorable Lake George 2-day vacation for under $40 (not including gas).

Looking Forward to Sweet Beginnings We're starting to put together the program and invite for the Opening Day event on September 13th titled "Sweet Beginnings". Stay tuned for updates on this webpage and in your home mailbox. It's the Sunday before Rosh Hashanah (which begins on Friday Night at the end of that week). We've already heard from quite a few alumni who will be up here to celebrate this exciting beginning of a new chapter of Shabbos House and UAlbany history.
Incoming Freshmen A few of the students up here for orientation have stopped by to say hello, check out Jewish Life or take a tour inside the new Shabbos House. The Hillel Staff has been at the Chapel House table with info for parents and incoming students. We've seen quite a bit of interest so far, we hope it will be a good incoming freshmen class. It always remains to be seen, you can never tell the year prior, or even until Sukkot. It just takes time...
Moshe's Back from Camp On Monday, July 27th (following our trip down and up from NY for the reunion) we drove to Parksville NY near Liberty in the Catskill Mountains to pick up Moshe after a great month at Camp Gan Israel. Believe it or not, he came back with most his stuff intact. He was happy to share memories and experiences, he really soaked in a lot during his four weeks there.
NYC Alumni Reunion
7/26/09
It was a beautiful turnout and great vibe at this year's Shabbos House NYC Alumni Reunion 2009. (See the page for lots of photos, or people's Facebook posts). Once again, we did it at the Chabad Loft at 182 Fifth Ave (thanks again to Rabbi Yakov Bankhalter and his staff) a bright, spacious and convenient location across the historic Flatiron building (and Toyota's daisy WiFi's) in lower Manhattan. Thanks to everyone who came out, we saw friends from as early as the Class of 1998 and as recent as 2009, with some friends from 2002 and 2004 that we haven't seen in the longest time. Most of the food was polished off (we brought it down in coolers from Albany) and the room was nice and chill. Rabbi Mendel presented a Dvar-Torah relating to the Nine-Days called "Digging for the Lost Ark" and a powerpoint about little known aspects of the new building titled, "Behind the Scenes of the new Shabbos House". Raizy led a card game titled "Past/Future" in which we went around the room and everyone shared a memory (and an imaginative insight or wish for the future) based on the noun they were given. There also was a survey handed out about long-distance alumni learning opportunities. Thanks to all who came out, it was great to see everyone!
Building Update.. The granite counters have been installed in the kitchens, lighter color for dairy and darker color for meat. The materials for the hardwood flooring were delivered, first to be installed in the library and office upstairs, while the drywall/sheetrock main room downstairs continues to be prepared for priming and painting, and then wallpapered with two coordinating colors. Most of the perimeter plantings are in and have mulch around them. The two types of blacktop paving (porous and non-porous) are scheduled to be done before the end of July. The appliance delivery was delayed, and the lighting hasn't come in yet either.
Last of Cozy-Shabbat Weekends in July We did the last 3 weekends in June, all the weekends in July. Generally, July has been a quieter month. This weekend we had our smallest family size in a while (it was Moshe's last weekend in camp, and Mushky and Chani's first of three weeks away). Sara is now the oldest at home and has been a huge help. Student-wise, it's been pretty small as well. We call it "Cozy-Shabbat" for a reason!

The first weekend in August looks like we'll have a nice crowd, as Raizy's sister Nechama Dina and family will be visiting, visiting alumni Jessica and Craig will be sponsoring Shabbat in honor of their recent engagement, and will be up here with alumni friends, and current student Steve who's been up here on student government business most of the summer will have NY area friends up to visit.

Building Update
7/22/09
Much of the new 103 emerald green arborvitae shrubs are now planted at the perimeter of the 320 property, the quarry tiles for the main kitchen were delivered, and the upper floor has been primed with its first paint coat. Hard to believe how far this project has come!
Cozy-Shabbats now scheduled into August Thanks to requests from several alumni and students we're going to do one more week of Cozy-Shabbat, following all the weekends in July, we're also doing the first weekend in August. We also hope to have Rabbi Sholom Ber & Nechama Dina (Raizy's sister) Hendel come up and visit for that Shabbos as well.
Ask Rabbi Mendel now updated Thanks to alumni prodding we've updated the Ask Rabbi Mendel page with some more recent questions, with more to be posted soon. We still haven't changed the format, questions are still listed in order asked and are not organized yet by theme, but we hope to get to that point some other time.
Fall 2009 Calendar Updated There are and will be more events to post and add details, but for now the outline of the Fall 2009 events are online on our "Schedule" page in Google Calendar format. Local candle-lighting and Havdalah times are posted there as well. It will be a busy season of transition, with many special celebrations.

Zohar and Laura Engagement
7/19/09
After bringing Mushky and Chani (and their luggage) to their JGR Camp in Troy, and we Sara and Bassie to Mendel's parents for the day (Moshe still has one more week away at Camp Gan Israel in Parksville NY) we drove down with baby Bluma to celebrate the engagement of Zohar and Laura (both Class of 2006) in Queens NY. It was great to share in their Simcha, and also wonderful to meet and catch up some more with alumni friends.
Mushky & Chani off to Camp
7/19/09
Early Sunday morning we packed up Mushky and Chani and drove them to Sage on College on River and First Streets in Troy NY where they'll be enjoying 3 weeks at the Jewish Girls Retreat - JGR. The camp isn't far away at all, it's less than 15 minutes drive from out home, but we only see them once throughout the sleepaway camp experience. They have dedicated counselors, lots of workshops and activities, meet friends from throughout the Northeast. Hopefully when they come back it will be time to start packing up to move to the new Shabbos House!
The Uncommon Empire Commons Shabbos Guest
7/17/09
It was past 7:30pm on Friday Night, Cozy-Shabbat, when the phone-rang. We already began to sing the prayers, but it was technically before the onset of Shabbos and the Caller-ID read a UAlbany number. So we picked up the phone. It was a woman from the Empire Commons office telling us that she had a religious visitor who needed to find a Jewish community before sundown. She knew of us through a friend. So I asked her to mark our location on a map and send him over. (She knew where we were). Even with the map he got a little lost and circled once or twice, but made it in time for Shabbos. He was headed further west, but delays further south on the Thruway cost him time, so he stayed with us. He's from a Satmar Chassidim family, but interested in Breslov and into Chabad and Carlebach melodies, and added spice to our Friday Night and Shabbos afternoon.
Building Updates
7/17/09
The shipment commercial wallpaper vinyl wall-covering arrived, and all the upper floor floor tiles are now in. The upper floor is nearly ready for it's first coat of primer and paint. The interim bank-loan for the construction phase went through - and is now operational. This will converted into a longer-term loan in a few months. We're very appreciative for all building fund contributions at this time (despite the current economic hardship) as well as alumni now joining the "Chai-Club" of monthly contributions which will help us with cash-flow and the monthly payments.
The Philly Trip
7/16/09
The Philly conference was pretty interesting, 20 Chabad Rabbis from large and small campuses across the country discussing methods to increase and expand student-friendly Torah study opportunities on college campuses. It was a preliminary discussion, but we already came back with some neat ideas. There was also some pretty heated and intense arguments (about ideas, not personal) about commitment levels and expectations, standards and benchmarks for both student participants and Chabad House staff.

The train ride was long, 5 hours in both directions, plus station-wait times. Mendel spent more time aboard than actually at the conference itself. And there was no internet connection, so all he could do is work on ideas for the upcoming Fall '09 semester of Torah Tuesday classes.

Mendel in Philly for campus Torah classes conference
7/16/09
Mendel's headed to Philadelphia for a one-day conference of Chabad on Campus to discuss new ideas and programs for enriching Torah study on college campuses nationwide. It's a 5 hour train ride there and back in one 24-hour period, hopefully they have some kind of WiFi aboard Amtrak.

Talking of campus Torah-study, at Albany we're planning a new series of Torah-Tuesdays (including a few classes that were prepared pre-2005). We're looking for students to prepare and present a 10-minute topic once each month during Shabbat lunch. And once we're settled in the new Shabbos House, we hope to revive or start new study groups based on student-interest.

Day at the Fair
7/15/09
It's been our family tradition to go to the 3-county Altamont Fair each August since we moved here in 1997. But we've been busy with the building, our summer travels and catching up with Shabbos House work, the kids need (and deserve) an outing, so we decided to go for a half-day-outing to the Saratoga County Fair in Ballston Spa which opens each year in mid-July. For ideas of places and activities to do in the Albany-Saratoga area (that are wallet-and family-friendly) see Rabbi Mendel's "Places 2 Go, Things 2 Do" (3 PDF pages) that he made for the Saratoga Chabad website and the Maimonides School.
Fall '09 semester now online Check out the Google Calendar (either on Shabbos House's website or at UAlbany Hillel) for the current listing of events and alternating Shabbat weekends etc. List will continue to be updated as we get closer to the semester, as events are finalized - so stay tuned. Major dates to keep in mind at Shabbos House are:
  • 7/26: Alumni Reunion 1-3pm in NYC 182 Fifth Ave...
  • 8/16: Fundraising BBQ graciously hosted by Dan ('04) & Jenni Levy in Teaneck NJ - details TBA
  • 9/13: Opening date, ribbon-cutting and dedication for the new Shabbos House at 320 Fuller Road
  • 10/9-10/09: Homecoming Weekend at Simchat Torah - first time at the all-new Shabbos House and all-new Sukkah

The first few weekends will still be at the old place. The Sept 13th dedication is still being planned. The Sukkah Building BBQ may entail less work this year, but there's no shortage of what to do. Chanukah falls during Finals Week, look for a pre-Shabbat first Menorah lighting, and the 2nd one together with Havdalah. The L'chaim Board is working on a Mad-Science Shabbat with an energizing Nanotech professor. Shabbos House and Hillel will once again collaborate on Yom-Kippur Services. Rosh Hashanah falls on a weekend this year, with virtually no extra days off, so whether we do a special Rosh Hashanah prayer service and festive meals depends on student-interest (and hopefully some additional donor sponsorship).

Welcome Hillel's Lisa Friedman
7/13/09
Today is Lisa's first day on the job with UAlbany Hillel (see their newly revamped website). She comes from work with Hillel at URI in Rhode Island, and is an alumni of Albany - so she knows the local scoop. Lisa attended Shabbos House when she went to school here and we're looking forward to working with her and Rabbi Nomi to continue to grow Jewish life at UAlbany. We met together for lunch to welcome her and to catch up on Jewish life here since her graduation and work in Rhode Island.
Seeing Moshe on Visiting Day in Camp Gan Israel Parksville
7/12/09
Two weeks into Moshe's first sleepaway camp experience we drove down to the Catskills (the camp is in Parksville near Liberty NY) to spend the Visiting Day with him. He's doing great! He has lively, energetic counselors, bunkmates from as close as Albany and as far as Las Vegas and Florida, a neatly made made and cubby... He told us all about "Shnoozy" the night-activity director, and Shmaryonkee who "visits" the camp dining hall with a hilarious skit near the end of Shabbos, about his bunk's runaway to Shop-Rite. We met his head-counselors and his division head, saw his learning class, and spent a little time on camp-grounds. We took him off camp-grounds to enjoy a family-picnic in a Liberty Park, and for a windy road-trip to visit Raizy's parents in Camp Emunah and Lauren R. at the nearby ILTSE Summer study program. Someone put gum on his water canteen, and he "might" need a little more spending money, but otherwise he's all set. We pick him up on the day after the alumni reunion July 27th.
Guests for Cozy-Shabbat
7/10-11/09
For the 2nd Cozy-Shabbat in July we had a group of students come up from home to spend a weekend in Albany make it a very special Cozy-Shabbat.
Building Update The tapers are still taping the sheetrock at the seams and screws. The tiles were ordered (after much debate, research and budgeting) and are now being installed in their respective areas. Many of the doors and their trim are already put in. The major appliances (ovens, even microwaves and - yes - dishwashers) are on order and will arrive the 3rd week in July. We'll have to wait until the end of August to hear back about the commercial fridges, sinks and steel worktables.
Craig & Ayelet Sheva Brachos in Queens
7/6/09
Craig (Dec '08) and Ayelet got married in Israel on Thursday of the July 4th weekend, and flew back to the United States on Sunday for Craig to begin his new job in NYC. Several Albany friends got together to arrange a Sheva Brachos on Monday in Kew Garden Hills, Queens at the home of Motti ('06) and Ilana (Masters '07). It was crowded and hot, and many said it was just like the atmosphere at Shabbos House on a busy Friday Night. We're glad we came down (we drove back the same night) it was beautiful to see so many good friends and to be able to celebrate with Craig and Ayelet. Mazal Tov! May we always share Simchas...
July 4th - Coziest Shabbat Yet

Well, it was the July 4th weekend, so that must explain it. 4 students came over on Friday Night, and 2 for Shabbos Lunch, so that makes it out Coziest Summer Shabbat yet. But we did have a great time with the kids, and we enjoyed the relaxing downtime ourselves. Chani had two friends over to celebrate her ZAzZq

Thunderstorm Schenectady BBQ
7/1/09
On Wednesday afternoon, major heavy thunderstorms rocked the area, with torrential downpours, of more than an inch of rain per hour. That same afternoon we had a family BBQ scheduled in Schenectady, at the home of Rabbi Shmuly & Laiky Rubin who run the Chabad House Student Center that serves Union College. The rain didn't stop us, or any of the other guests, and we had delicious food and a great time.

As a souvenir of the event, Rabbi Israel Rubin (Mendel's father) found "Rebbe-Dollars" tucked away in his archives that belonged to each of the sons. The Rebbe would give a dollar - to empower one as a messenger for charity - along with a blessing (and on Sundays, a quick opportunity to ask the Rebbe something specific etc) and we would give another dollar (and more) to charity in exchange, and keep the Rebbe's dollar inscribed with our names, the date/occasion, and perhaps something the Rebbe said to us then. These were always very precious to us, but all the more so now that it is 15 years since the Rebbe's passing in 1994.

Spontaneous trip to Binghamton Chabad
6/30/09
When dropping Moshe off at Camp Gan Israel in Parksville NY, we met Mrs. Rivky Slonim of Binghamton Chabad who insisted that we take a detour on the way home and stop in to take a tour of their newly constructed Chabad House. We were there before during construction, but she said we could learn some tips by coming by and seeing the place all completed. So - we did! We drove all the way west on Route 17 (the future 86) and got a tour of their grand, phenomenal facility. While the new Shabbos House is on a small scale and more modest, simpler style, we still got a whole bunch of ideas that will be helpful with our continuing construction. And we enjoyed a delicious lasagna supper, too!
Moshe's off to Camp Gan Israel
6/30/09
This is Moshe's first time to go away to summer-camp, and together with two classmates at Maimonides, he's been looking forward to this out-of-Albany (and out of the girls bedroom) experience for quite a while. The camp is CGI - Gan Israel in Parksville NY (a little above Liberty NY) where Rabbi Mendel spent many happy summers as a child, and even a one or two as a staff member. Moshe is going for one month and will be back home in August. We're excited about this milestone and opportunity, and hope he has a great summer.

Extended Weekend at Chabad on Campus Kinus Convention
6/26-29/09
Together with nearly 100 other Shluchim families that run Chabad Houses on college campuses all over America (and a few from abroad) we had an intense, enlightening, empowering and inspiring convention at a hotel in the Catskills. The farbrengens on Shabbos, the ideas gleaned, techniques polished, ideas explored - plus the comraderie and spirited togetherness. Actually the Achdus - unifying spirit - was the best part of it all. Moshe, Sara and Bassie had a day-camp program throughout the weekend, Chani did an amazing job taking care of Bluma, and Mushky worked on the babysitting staff, primarily taking care of an adorable kid from Arizona. It was busy and thought-provoking, with many workshops, sessions and discussions.

Packing for Camp
6/25/09
Labeling underwear, ironing-on names to socks, getting flashlight batteries and cute toothpaste tubes, were all part of the packing excitement in preparation for Moshe to leave for camp next Tuesday. Buying shoes and bathing-suits, finding stuff we've tucked away, lots of work to check off that packing checklist.
Seen at the Rebbe's Ohel on Gimmel Tammuz after Midnight
6/24/09
Gimmel Tammuz is the Rebbe's yarzteit (anniversary of passing) and throughout all hours of the night and day, people were coming to spend moments of prayer and reflection at the Rebbe's resting place in Queens. The lines were incredibly long, especially considering the lateness of the hour (we arrived there at midnight) and along the way there were Psalm books, inspirational reading, and video selections on large flat screens of short clips of the Rebbe's talks, interaction with people. (This is Mendel writing here). In front of me were a group of French boys and their teacher, seemed to be young teens, from a modern or sephardic community. Alongside me was a friend from my Yeshiva days, 4 years my senior, who had a younger brother in my class. On my right was a non-Chabad Chassidic young man, with a velvety up-hat and long peyot. There were countless others, of course, but I wasn't sightseeing that night. I do remember the Chassidic man on my right perking up when the screen displayed an image of several Shtreimel-wearing Chassidim and their children coming to the Rebbe for Lekach (honey-cake and wishes for a sweet new year). It made me realize the power of familiarity.

Around 1am I met up with Raizy outside the Ohel, literally on the street, which had been police barricaded off and was teeming with people. She came out earlier and arranged for me to see my youngest brother Motti, who came in from his year of study in a Chicago Yeshiva, my brother Ephraim who is doing his advanced studies in Crown Heights, her brother Shimon, who came in from his year of study in Kfar Chabad Israel, and Shachar Luz - our dear friend and 320 resident who joined us for one year while he did engineering work for an Albany firm, and before he headed out to study in Israel. We haven't seen Shachar in two years! There was so much to catch up and so little time. It was very late (or was it early?) when we finally headed back up to Albany, and arrived home at 5:45am, after stopping to cat-nap at several rest-areas.

NY Trip on Wed
6/24/09
Four of the kids stayed with Mendel's parents in Albany, while Raizy, Mendel, Chani and Bluma traveled down to NY for the day. First stop was Monsey and a breakfast special at the Bagel Place where we met Genna, then down to Mr. Hoffman's Behr-Thysen art gallery in NYC which will be building us a new Aron Kodesh for the new building. Following that meeting we headed to Crown Heights where we met with commercial wall-covering manufacturers who are donated heavy-duty (washable and durable) wallpaper for the entire new building. So many options of color and texture swatches! Then we spent some time at the Galperin home where we got to see the Greenberg's and Gansburg's from Detroit and Toronto. In the evening we attended the opening session of our Chabad on Campus Convention (to be held in the Catskills, but the opening session was in NY) addressed by Mr. George Rohr and major philanthropist to many Chabad on Campus endeavors, as well as the naming dedication of the new Shabbos House here at UAlbany. Then we headed to the Rebbe's Ohel in Queens, and joined thousands (this was 12am midnight) of Jews from all walks of life standing online to enter the gravesite for a few short moments of prayer. We often go to the Ohel when we are in NY, but this was a most auspicious day, the anniversary of the Rebbe's passing and a time to rededicate ourselves to his teachings and vision.
  updated 6/20/09
Lots of Travel for end of June On Wednesday some of us will be headed down to NY for some meetings regarding the new building, a visit with Mr. George Rohr - the naming sponsor of the new center, and to visit the gravesite "Ohel" of the Lubavitcher Rebbe on the occasion of his 15th yartzeit on the 3rd of Tammuz (Wednesday night and Thursday). We also have the Chabad on Campus Conference in the Catskills, and a day after that, we go back down to the Catskills to take Moshe to camp for his first overnight camp experience. (BTW for those who want to send him a postcard - during the month of July - his address will be: Moshe Rubin c/o Camp Gan Israel 487 Parksville Road Parksville NY 12768).
Decisions, Decisions... Now that the sheetrock is coming in, there are many choices and decisions that have to be made regarding the colors and finishes for the new building. It's important that all the different pieces: wall-covering, flooring, wood-trim, lighting - come together and create a nice mood, especially for the main room. There are so many options, and also a limited budget, so we hope to make the best choices. Thank G-d we're not doing this alone, we have a great team between the architect and contractor, friends of Shabbos House, and an interior designer who we met with today.
Mazal Tov Joe and our Sunday in Monsey Joe Yosef Joralemon got engaged to Naami Kogos, so we made a day-trip to Monsey where took the kids out to pizza for lunch, and then to Kosher chinese for dinner (what a treat!) and to his engagement party (Vurt) at a nice Shul in Monsey. We also went to Amazing Savings and picked up some things the kids can use for camp.
3rd Cozy Shabbat We did the first 3 weekends in June, Cozy-Shabbat-style, ranging from 10-20 students on Friday Nights. Following our Cozy-Shabbat tradition, each week we went around the table with everyone sharing something interesting, inspirational, humorous etc from their week's experiences.

Finally, Mushky Bas-Mitzvah Pics posted.. Mushky still has to get to the thank-you notes, but now that school is over, and she's done with her finals, it will be a good time. We finally got around to posting the photos of the beautiful Simcha online. We have many photos of students and alumni at the event and will be glad to share the photos (hi-res) with those who took pictures. Give us a call 518.438.4227 or email us.

Building Update Sunday, September 13th, 2009 is the set-date for the grand opening dedication of the new, bigger and better Shabbos House, so Yefim Baskin and his construction crew and sub-contractors have been working quickly to move the progress along. As of mid-June 2009, most of the sheetrock is in, and walls are really taking shape. The kitchen cabinets have been installed upstairs and on the main floor, and the kitchen appliances will soon be ordered and installed. The lighting fixtures will be ordered soon as well. If you're in Albany and would like a tour inside, come by during daylight hours and we'll be happy to show you around. Or for the meantime, browse the "320 Building Blog" for updates.
2nd Cozy-Shabbat
6/12-13/09
The nice cozy crowd of locals and summer students was enhanced by Johanna, Sheryl and Jamie who came up for the weekend from downstate and Aron who came up to spend Shabbos with us from downtown in Albany. We didn't have Minyan for the davening times, but we did have one for the dinner. Bob, a former Albanian, living in Florida for the past 20 years and in town for a family occasion, spent Shabbos with us as well. His mother, goes back many years in the Albany community, and has interesting Albany memories of South Pearl Street, and Albany Jewish "celebrities" that we knew as well.
WC Newsletter Spring '09 Update The bi-annual Shabbos House "What's Cooking?" Spring 2009 newsletter update is now in the mail to the homes of students, alumni, friends and supporters of Shabbos House. There are photos from the Purim Carnival, Mushky's Bat-Mitzvah, the construction progress, and much more. To see the online PDF version, visit our "What's Cooking?" newsletter PDF index page.
Kids School Year Winding Up The school year is winding up for the Rubin kids with outings, parties, trips and special activities. Depending on the grade level, they've gone on picnics, hiked Thatcher Park's Indian Ladder Trail, visited the Watervliet Arsenal Museum, the Saratoga Battlefield and climbed the 188 steps of the Saratoga Monument. Some will be going to a glow-in-the-dark mini-golf (to complement their recent unit on force, gravity, friction and velocity). Their last day is June 18th.
Remembering Ronen Segal Ronen was an alumni of UAlbany and Shabbos House ('99/'00) who passed away in the prime of his life this past April. Ronen was a gentle soul, a spiritual seeker, a religious person, who left behind an empty void and two small children.

His family put together a website www.ronensegal.com and those who remember him can email their memories to ronenmemories@gmail.com as well as a special fund to support his two children: The Ronen Segal Memorial Fund c/o Segal & Schuh Law Group, 13575 58th Street N. Suite 140, Clearwater FL 33760.

University Announcements Since graduation in May, there have been several major announcements by the University at Albany. George Phillip, interim president since Susan Herbst was Officer-in-Charge after the untimely passing of Kermit Hall, will become the new University President. The School of Business (whose dean, Professor Donald Siegel, addressed our grad party this year) will be starting construction on a well-designed new building across from University Hall, and the doorway to the uptown UAlbany main campus. CNSE, the college of nanoscale science and engineering (which operates Albany Nanotech) will open an undergraduate program.
First Summer '09 Cozy-Shabbat
6/5-6/09
After being away for Memorial Day Weekend and Shavuot, our first "Cozy-Shabbat" summer weekend back was the first weekend in June. Of course, we did our "Cozy-Shabbat" tradition of "going around the table" with everyone sharing something from their week. We plan to do 3 "Cozy-Shabbat" weekends in June, and 3 more in July.
New Colonie Kosher Price Chopper
6/1-2/09
With much buzz and fanfare, the new Colonie Price Chopper supermarket (which houses the region's Kosher Store) opened on June 1st and 2nd. The new store is considered one of the "greenest" supermarkets in the nation, with natural sky-lighting, fuel-cell technologies, LED lighting, recycled materials in construction and things like that. It also has a greatly improved and expanded Kosher section. The entire bakery is now under Vaad supervision, half of it pareve and half of it dairy (non-chalav-yisrael) and the entire Bagel Factory is similarly Kosher, with an expanded food court sit-down eatery right next door to it. There are many more freezer selections and Israeli products in the Kosher aisles.
Memorial Day through Shavuot Holiday Toronto Trip After such a hectic and full semester, it was great to get away to Raizy's sister Rivky and Rabbi Levi Gansburg in York Mills, Toronto. While this trip was hardly a vacation, it was a fun and exciting change of scenery, with lots of quality and memorable time with the kids. On Memorial Day we got up early and drove to Rochester, where Barbara G. treated us to a family pass at the wonderful Strong Museum of Play. The kids had fun there all day, from Mushky to Bassie. We stopped off at the University of Rochester Chabad House for a BBQ with our colleagues Rabbi Asher and Devorah Leah Yares, and then headed to Toronto. On Tuesday evening, York Mills Chabad had a gala dinner in the Windsor Arms, a old-school classy downtown Toronto hotel, where we saw Marc Salem the mind-reader perform. On Wednesday we took the kids for pizza on the famous Bathurst Street, and shopped for Shavuot ingredients in the all-Kosher Sobey's in Thornhill. We also stopped at Chabad-Gate where Mushky and Chani got to see two of their counselors from the Jewish Girls Retreat Summer program. Later on Wednesday, Mendel took the kids to the Bata Shoe Museum on Bloor Street, where they saw a "Chalitzah" shoe which comes from the Torah and is described in the Talmud. On Thursday, Mendel took the kids to the Casa Loma, a magnificent medieval-type castle in the center of Toronto dating from 1910, with towers and turrets, secret staircases and underground tunnels, oak carvings and beautiful gardens. On Thursday night the holiday began, and that we night Mendel and Raizy were "scholars-in-residence" giving the late-night classes for York Mills Chabad. They had nice Minyans both days, with delicious Kiddushes following the services. While we were there, they announced plans to renovate the interior of their current rental space, to enlarge their synagogue and programming area. On both days of the holiday we had lots of food and great meals, and the kids took walks around the neighborhood, which features very large and elaborate homes. As soon as the holiday ended on Saturday night, we drove through the night (taking turns on the 90, 81, and a host of other roads) to reach NY by Sunday morning, for an Albany wedding celebrated in Howard Beach NY. We had a great time at the wedding, and then drove back to Albany, late Sunday afternoon.
Graduation Day
5/17/09
Time again to say farewell, to students who have been active in Jewish life and at Shabbos House, and with whom we have become close friends over the years. Following the main commencement ceremonies there was, as usual, an open-house BBQ at Shabbos House for graduates, parents and families, and friends. We wish everyone much success in all their endeavors and look forward to being in touch in the future, and hearing good news from everyone.
Graduation Weekend
5/15-16/09
Over Graduation Weekend, Shabbos House hosted Friday Night Dinner and Shabbat Lunch, and a light meal before Shabbos ended. It was great meeting the families of graduates with whom we've been close over these four years. On Sunday, following the main commencement ceremonies (held this year at the new entrance plaza near University Hall instead of behind the Science Library) there was an afternoon-long open house BBQ at Shabbos House. Mazal Tov to all the graduates, we wish you much happiness and success and many opportunities and new horizons in the years to come..
Lag B'Omer
5/12/09
Lag B'Omer is traditionally a time for mystical reflection, joyous celebration, bonfires, singing, going out to parks and fields, and with the Rebbe's encouragement: children's parades. Our children at the Maimonides School had a lively parade (drum corps, Fiddler Float, class banners and hats, Albany Trolley, Police Horse...) from their school on Partridge Street, down New Scotland Avenue to Temple Israel, and all the way up to the JCC.

At Shabbos House that evening, it was already Finals Week when we don't usually schedule weekday events. But how can we let Lag B'Omer pass and not do something special? So we planned a fire-pit (which didn't work out as well as we'd like) out on the deck with smores, chocolate fountain inside, and a relaxing evening which people came and went, and some actually stayed for quite a while.

Grad Party
5/10/09
Grad Party at Shabbos House 5/10/09... The annual tradition continues since the class of 2000, now with the class of 2009. This will hopefully be the last class to celebrate their grad party and graduation in the old Shabbos House. This year's featured speaker was Professor Donald Siegel, the new dean of the UAlbany School of Business, who spoke about opportunity in downturns, the values of social networks and the power of effort, and about reinvigorating entrepreneurship. Genna, Jamie and Barbara put together the Senior Roast which was a powerpoint based on the books for dummies series. Rabbi Manon of Hillel spoke about her personal post-graduate and not-yet hired experiences, and what she's learned from it, including: patience, value of volunteerism, positive attitude and confidence that things will work out eventually and more. Rabbi Mendel and Raizy presented each graduate with the new printing of the Shabbos House Cookbook, and a letter inside that highlights their personal accomplishments and communal contributions to Jewish UAlbany. Rabbi Manon presented each graduating senior with the traditional UAlbany Hillel gift of a framed Chamsah with Fountain Day in the background of the words "Blessed be your comings and goings". Several seniors who were especially active received special awards from Shabbos House: Adam Kris received an Easy-Button for his "easy-going, never-a-problem dedication"; Joanna Smith got a salt-shaker for "spicing things up at Shabbos House"; Sheryl Hoffman got an engraved measuring cup for "abundant measures of dedication and friendship"; Jon Dickens got an engraved book-clock for on-time and meaningful times"; Marisa Butensky got an engraved paintbrush for "adding color to the Jewish Womens Connection"; Jen Sovronsky got a glass vase engraved with "gracefully unifying UAlbany blossoms"; Mike Pekuly got a wooden exclamation point for his "enthusiasm and joy". The class picture was taken outside the old Shabbos House, for hopefully the last time. It's amazing how much changes in one year. A year ago at the Grad Party for the Class of 2008 we had a demolition party for the old 320, and for this grad party we were taking tours inside the new Shabbos House building on the same site! See pictures at Grad Party 2009...

New Spring Reading Day Tradition
5/6/09
Shabbos House has begun a new annual tradition for the Spring semester Reading Day (fall has its Midnight Breakfast). The outgoing and incoming L'chaim Student Board comes together for a luncheon at Shabbos House to reflect on the year past, and look forward to the year ahead. Some old programs may have new twists, and some new ideas are in the cooker, stay tuned...
Maimonides School Dinner
5/4/09
This year the Maimonides School annual Dinner (which Raizy caters and for which Mendel prepares the Journal, Video etc) was scheduled for May 4th, not long after Mushky's Bas-Mitzvah, and just before the Grad-Party and the UAlbay Graduation Weekend. A hectic time to be sure, but somehow it worked out. This year's dinner theme was "Explorers!" in honor of the 400 years since Henry Hudson sailed up to the river that bears his name to Albany. In that spirit, a few UAlbany professors: Drs. Scott Tenenbaum, Seth Chaiken and Eric Block were included among the honorees and Explorer highlights.

  4/27/09
Ronen Segel Funeral Ronen Segel (Class of '99) passed away and his funeral will be Tuesday morning, April 28th, 9:15am at a Livingston NJ funeral home at 68 Old Short Hills. It is with great sorrow that we share this news, may we only share Simchas in the extended Shabbos House family.
The Yom HaShoah Holocaust Vigil
4/20-21/09
As in years past, the names of victims were read at the podium for 24 hours around the clock. A series of Holocaust movies were shown throughout near the small fountain, and there was a lot of available material for those interested. On the following night, Rabbi Mendel's "Torah-Tuesday" was on Holocaust Survivor Resilience and Optimism, which focused around a powerful Yiddish song by Yom-Tov Ehrlich as well as related readings.
Mushky's Bas-Mitzvah
4/19/09
It was a beautiful event celebrated at the Albany Nanotech CNSE further up on Fuller Road. Thanks to all who participated and made it such a special occasion. We finally got some Bas-Mitzvah pictures up. May we always celebrate Simchas and joyous milestones.
Post-Passover Hillel Dinner Baruch Hashem for the alternating arrangement and the post-Passover Hillel dinner on Campus Center. Otherwise, we're not sure how we could have managed to put together Passover (and that it entails) and Mushky's Bas-Mitzvah a few days later (and all that entails...)
Passover 2009 at UAlbany
4/14-16/09
Here are the announcement pages with Pesach 2009 Info at UAlbany. Being a holiday, we hadrly have photos, aside for some pre-Passover clean-up and food prep. Due to the extended nearly week-long break, Shabbos House wasn't open for the Seders, but we were back in business for the last 2 days of the holiday. On the 7th and 8th days of Passover we had "revolving-door" lunches to accommodate class schedules, and festive meals during the evenings.
  4/8/09
Communal Sun Blessing
4/8/09
The Rubin family joined many in the Albany Jewish community for a special once-in-28-years ceremony outside the Maimonides School for the rare sun blessing. It was an exciting event, cold, windy and slightly overcast, but the sun came shining through just as we were ready to do the special blessing. Jack McEneny the local NYS assemblyman brought greetings and a citation, Jim and Lori Clevenson of the Jewish world - recordkeepers for the greater Albany Jewish community set the time-capsule containers into the brick pillar, Rabbi Israel Rubin led the ceremonies and Rabbi Nachman Simon completed tractate Bava Kama for the firstborn Siyum.
Pre-Pesach Prep We went through almost every nook and cranny at Shabbos House, cleaned up, threw lots out, got the carpets steamed, bookshelves, closest and cabinets cleaned up, Chametz found and removed from toy bins, bookshelves, most everywhere in the kitchen and more. Thanks to help from the good folks at Beta Alpha Psi, the Shabbos House CPSP volunteers, Simmy Rubin, the Rubin Kids and others for getting non-Passover stuff out or downstairs, bringing up Passover stuff, cleaning the tables and chairs, and everything else. Shabbos House is a little emptier, and a lot fresher - and to the very best we can manage, it is now Chametz Free!

See our Pesach 2009 Page for updates on Passover festivites, meals etc at UAlbany.

Mushky's Bat-Mitzvah Prep Mushky is working on the last finishing touches to her "HaYom-Yom" powerpoint presentation to be shared at her Bat-Mitzvah, on the Sunday after Passover, April 19th at the Nanotech facility. Quite a few RSVPs have come in from community, students and even alumni, so we're looking forward to an exciting afternoon together.
Chabad on Campus National Raffle - benefits Shabbos House Chabad on Campus Foundation arranged for a $10,000 raffle to benefit Campus Chabads around the country - at minimal cost for each Chabad on Campus location, as the prizes were donated.   updated 4/1/09
OK, we finally got Building Blog updates online After frequent Building Blog updates with photos of the construction progress in December and January, alumni noticed that we didn't update much since then. Sorry it's been busy and hectic - but we finally did get some February and March photos online. As of the start of April the 2-tone vinyl siding is going up and there's a possibility that the masons will start work on the brick accents before Passover. Plumbers continue to work on plumbing, heating and cooling inside the building.
Hillel Student Elections Update
4/1/09
The Hillel student board held their annual elections in LC 20 on Wednesday night. The students elected Yael Gavronsky as President, Barbara Gossin as VP, Dan Cohen as treasurer, Jamie Antell as Jewish Life Chair, Eric Kravit as Social Action Chair and Roy Monselise as Israel Chair and Amy Kattan as PR Chair.
Torah-Tues on Silence
3/31/09
Thank G-d, Rabbi Mendel's voice came back, thanks to the vocal cord surgery and therapy at the start of 2009. During the raspy voice, and no voice period at the end of 2008 he thought of doing a class on what Judaism thinks of silence (Jews do like to talk a lot, and Judaism backs that up). The class was nicely attended, about 30 students between both classes, and the study centered on "Good Silence, Bad Silence and Mystical Silence."
Mushky's Bat-Mitzvah Invite Card Mushky is turning Bat-Mitzvah! When we moved to Albany Mushkie was only 4 months old, and now she's turning Bat-Mitzvah!! We're so excited to celebrate this milestone with (extended) family and friends. All students and alumni are welcome. The event will be 1-3pm on Sunday April 19th. We'll have a buffet reception in the NanoFab North Rotunda (253 Fuller Road) and a short program and presentation in a nearby auditorium.
Passover Update at UAlbany Check our Passover 2009 page for detailed info on Passover meals at Shabbos House for the 7th and 8th days when you return from Spring Break, and other holiday info and links. If you need a place for the Seder, you are welcome to join us at Saratoga Chabad, or we can set you up locally.
Aleeza's "And Justice For All" @ Torah-Tues
3/24/09
As part of Hillel's Global Awareness Week, Aleeza Sklover prepared a powerpoint class titled "And Justice For All" about Tzedek and Social Action at Shabbos House's weekly Torah-Tuesday study program. Alongside the quoted texts she put pictures of social action trips she participated in over the years, in Biloxi Mississippi and in Tzfat and Bet She'an in Israel. Following the presentation, there was lively discussion about social action opportunities, obligations, and other things. And both Torah-Tuesday 5:30pm and 8:30pm sessions had very nice turnouts.

Challah for Hunger
3/22/09

As part of Hillel's Global Awareness Week (GAW) Nancy and her friends came over to Shabbos House to bake a special batch of Challah to sell at Campus Center tabling to benefit hunger programs in the Capital Region and in Darfur. It was a little intense to do it so soon after Shabbos, after catering the semi-formal for Hillel, and the in and out trip for the Bris-Milah in Staten Island. But we're glad to help with and be part of such a meaningful volunteer effort for those in need.
Bris Trip to Staten Island
3/22/09

Mazal Tov to Rob and Elana Klein on the birth of their firstborn son on Taanis Esther, and the Bris was on Sunday 3/22 at the Young Israel of Staten Island (Mendel especially liked the thought put into the Stained-Glass windows there). Rabbi Mendel and Raizy (with all the kids except for Mushky and Chani) drove down Sunday morning to Staten Island to attend this special Simcha, and it was an honor that Mendel was asked to say the naming portion of the Bris - the baby is named Eliezer Michoel for Elana's great-uncle (a Holocaust survivor who did not have children) and for Elana's grandfather. It was a very nice affair, and we got to see the parents of another alumni from Staten Island, and people we knew who used to live in the Albany area. Then we drove right back up to Albany to be on time for the "Challah For Hunger" baking at Shabbos House (see above).
Prepping for the Semi-Formal
3/21/09
It's been several years now that Raizy does the Kosher catering for the Hillel Semi-Formal event at the Appel Inn in Altamont. This year Hillel sold out their tickets and had a great turnout. Due to the earlier changing of the clocks Shabbos ends later this time of year, so it's a challenge getting all the food warmed, packed-up and transported to the Appel Inn before the buses arrive. But we did it! Thanks to everyone who helped in many different ways for this event. From what we heard - students who attended had a marvelous time. Alumni came up, too. The people, the atmosphere, the DJ, the food, the mood... t'was a great event.
  updated 3/19/09
Mushky's Bat Mitzvah Save the date - Sunday April 19th 1-3pm at the Nanotech facility on Fuller Road. All students (and alumni, if they can make it) are welcome to join in celebrating this special Simcha, there will be a buffet reception in the NanoFab North Rotunda and a program and presentation in the auditorium off the South Rotunda. See this page for updates on Mushky's Bat-Mitzvah.
New Building Update After a few months of constant website updates on the building progress, we slacked off in February, but hope to get back into it soon. Much of the February work was out of sight - plumbing, sprinkler system, concrete basement slab with radiant heat installed.
Moshe's Torah-Tuesday
3/17/09
On the 22nd of Adar, this year on March 18th, Moshe celebrated his ninth birthday at Torah-Tuesday, by presenting a powerpoint class of his "Sicha-Art" scanned and explained. On nearly every Shabbos morning Rabbi Mendel and Moshe study one of the Rebbe's more visual Sichot (talks) before Minyan, and on Sunday morning Moshe paints the concept or imagery on a canvas-board. Moshe did a wonderful job teaching the Torah-Tuesday class confidently and clearly sharing the message of each painting. One of his paintings is of the frogs who danced into Egyptian ovens (during the ten-plagues) despite being cold-blooded creatures. That's why he chose to celebrate with a frog cake. Thanks to Sheryl and Mommy for helping make that big green frog cake.
Kiddush & Eggs
3/14/09
The Irish Kegs and Eggs tradition supposedly got started in Albany, or at least took off here. We were worried it might affect our Shabbos morning Minyan. So we came up with "Kiddush and Eggs" and shifted the morning Minyan from Chapel House to Shabbos House where Raizy prepared a special pre-Torah Reading Kiddush and everyone enjoyed a nibble (including eggs) and at exactly that time we got our Minyan, and then some.
Back-to-Back Shabbos
3/13/09
Usually Hillel and Shabbos House alternate every other Friday Night Dinner, but the way the schedule of events fell this year this was a back-to-back Shabbos House weekend. The Friday Night dinner was generously and thoughtfully sponsored by the four girls: Jen, Yael, Darcy and Marisa of Suite "303" on Empire Commons, and they picked the menu which included a sweet and sour breaded chicken, pie-filling cake, and other goodies. Funding is tight, so the thoughtfulness of these girls is tremendously appreciated.
Don't Mess with the Esther Purim Feast
3/10/09
OK, we didn't show the Zohan movie, as we're not sure it's Kosher for Shabbos House, but we did go with the Chumus and Felafel theme (plus some Schug) and even some Prigat juice to make things interesting. We started off with a 5pm Megillah Reading for the daytime Mitzvah, putting money toward Matanot L'Evyonim (poor in Israel and also in our local community) and then dug into the felafel. The crowd thinned before a lively farbrengen got started, which kept going until about 9:30pm.
Purim Carnival at the CC Ballroom
3/9/09
The event was amazing, well-attended, great spirit. All together perhaps as many as 250-300 students participated. We got a bunch of photos up now. Check out the Purim Carnival 2009 page, the pre-Purim 2009 page and the Don't Mess with the Esther Purim Feast. Thanks to all for making this such an exciting event.
Carnival Prep & Setup
3/8-9/09
It was quite an undertaking to plan and execute the Purim Carnival, many thanks to the L'chaim Student Board, and its President Sheryl Hoffman, to all the student groups who participated and ran booths, to UAlbany Hillel and AvodaArts of NYC for the actors who enriched the program, and thanks to all who helped schlep the many boxes and materials from Shabbos House to the Campus Center, and to the clean-up crew. It took a lot of people to get it all together, and we really appreciate everyone's assistance.
Marvelous Minyan
3/7/09
Parshat Zachor, always read on the Shabbat before Purim is a very important Torah reading (which we wanted Raizy to be able to hear) so we did the Shabbos morning Minyan at Shabbos House - instead of the usual Chapel House. Although recent Minyans have been tight, we had a beautiful turnout, and celebrated with a pre-Torah Reading Kiddush Club. It was also baby Bluma's first chance to "kiss" the Torah. Thanks to Aron C. and John T. who came up from downtown for Shabbos, to prospective student Alan of Englewood NJ who was checking out the UAlbany campus community and to everyone who participated.
Persian Shabbat
3/6/09
It's been a while since we had the pre-Purim Persian Shabbat at Shabbos House, quite a few years now. Thanks to Ashley Shirazi and all her friends who came over to help out, we tried our best to do foods with Persian flavor and style. We did Kabobs and 3 types of rice, a Shirazi salad and other Persian specialties. The Persian cookies were great.
Purim Packets now in Quads
3/5/09
Thanks to the team who helped out at Torah-Tuesday and got the packets prepared in record time. All Dining Halls got a big bucket of the packets which include a Hamantasch cookie (by Reisman's Bakery in Brooklyn) a mini noisemaker and a candy, plus UAlbany Purim 2009 info.
Construction Update We haven't been updating the Building Blog in February (though we should and will) because most of the Gebruary developments are not as visible and photographable: installation of radiant heating in the basement, pouring of the basement concrete floor slab, installation of sprinkler system, duct work for HVAC and plumbing pipes throughout the building. We met to discuss the main room lighting with a designer, and finalized the plans for the kitchen appliances and cabinetry.

Purim 2009 Updates Planning continues toward the L'chaim Purim Carnival in the CC Ballroom on Monday, March 9th. In addition, a pre-Purim Persian Shabbat dinner is being planned, and a Purim-Day Feast titled: "You Don't Mess with the Esther" and Israeli foods - see more detail on the UAlbany Purim 2009 Page.
Hamantaschen Arrived 2,200 of them - filled with raspberry, apricot or chocolate. About 1,800 will go into the Purim Holiday packets to be distributed in the Quad Dining Halls, with the remainder for Hamantasch Fondue at the L'chaim Purim Carnival, and at the other Purim UAlbany events.
Downturn Torah For Torah-Tuesdays, Rabbi Mendel prepared and taught "Downturn Torah" with insights into these economically challenging times from Torah texts and teachings. If you'd like a copy of the handout for this "Torah-Stimulus" class email mail@shabboshouse.com

20's & 30's Shabbat II
2/20/09
Nearly 30 grad students and young professionals attended the 2nd "20's and 30's Shabbat" at Shabbos House together with Hillel's JenX, on the 2nd weekend of Presidents Week (with most UAlbany students still away on break). The first one was held on December 19th, which was attended by six people due to the 10" snowstorm that night, so this was a big step up. Attendees included public school teachers, grad students at Albany Nanotech, Sage College and Albany College of Pharmacy, and of course, quite a number of UAlbany alumni now working locally. And due the current economic climate, quite a few were between jobs and in the process of applying...
The Presidents Week Break UAlbany gave off for the entire Presidents Week break, so there were two weekends without UAlbany students. For the first weekend we went away to NY where Raizy attended the international Chabad Shluchos convention (see below) and for the 2nd weekend we hosted the "20s & 30s Shabbat" (see above).

During the week we tried to get some paperwork done, applied for grants (may them come to fruition - amen!) and did stuff for the Maimonides School - where our kids were not on break, aside for the extended weekend of Presidents Day (Friday and Monday off). Due to the many midweek Jewish holidays this year, and the 4 or 5 snowdays they already gave off, they couldn't give Presidents Weekend off, too.

Raizy at the Shluchos Convention Over Presidents Weekend we went down to Brooklyn for Raizy to attend the international Shluchos convention, a gathering of 2,500+ Chabad women doing Shlichus (as we do here at the Shabbos House in Albany) with lots of inspiration at gatherings, sessions and workshops, and especially at the grand banquet which was held at the Hilton Hotel in NYC. At the same time, we spent the weekend with Raizy's family in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and her married sisters who came in from Chicago, Toronto, Detroit and Houston. Mushky and Chani attended the convention's junior program, and Mushky was among the girls to sing at the grand banquet.
Purim Planning Purim is coming up on March 9th and 10th, and there's lots planned for the UAlbany Jewish community. Check out the Purim 2009 Page, and keep posted there - and on facebook - for more details as it becomes available. You may notice some "Where's Waldo?" signs popping up on campus, because "Waldo" will be at the Purim Carnival "where you're never lost in the crowd.."
320 Updates Work continues at 320 - keep posted at the "320 Building Blog" (comes right up on google). Much of the progress at 320 is now out of sight, we planned the kitchen designs, and the plumbers have begun their work, starting in the basement and all throughout the house. We haven't update many February photos yet, but we will post some soon.
  updated 2/12/09
Plumbing work begins on building The roof is up, windows are all in, and now the plumbing work begins on the new Shabbos House. Not as much change will be visible from the outside as work progresses, but things are moving ahead inside - and in the basement level. Obviously, the Building Fund still has quite a ways to go, but thanks to all who already pledged/contributed (or contributed twice and three times!) we're getting there.
IsraeLinks Trip $499 IsraeLinks is a post-birthright trip that blends enriched, in-depth study and discovery, touring and service, staffed by Chabad on Campus families (like Mendel and Raizy). This year they're running two trip dates to better accommodate student schedules, and to allow for more compact trips with unbelievably meaningful and enjoyable experiences. The trip is geared for those who want to get back to Israel, to learn more about what they saw in the whirlwind ten-day birthright israel experience. Registration closes soon - visit www.IsraeLinks.org to find out more and to register. Time is running out now...
Wine in Jewish Tradition Torah-Tuesdays on 2/10 was about Wine in Jewish tradition, a class that covered Halacha, trivia, inspiration and history. It was actually a lighter class, but people really got into it, its a familiar subject and its place in Jewish ritual is so common, with Kiddush and Havdalah...

Mazal Tov Craig and Ayelet! We were sitting at the L'chaim meeting planning the Purim carnival when we heard the news of their engagement in Israel! We wish Chayim Shraga (Craig) and Ayelet much happiness, overflowing blessing and all that they need. May we always share Simchas and joyous occasions.
L'Chaim Purim Carnival Meeting L'chaim Board met again to work on the Purim Carnival planned for March 9th, 7:30pm in the Campus Center Ballroom (following a Megillah Reading there) - it was a fun, productive meeting with great brainstorming and lots of ideas. If you'd like to have an activity booth at the carnival (we're not looking for information stuff) for your group of whatever, contact Joanna Smith or any L'chaim Board member, and let's get things rolling. Also, there will be a masquerade, too, like every year we have Purim on campus, so when you go home for break try to come back with something silly, funny or interesting. There are prizes for that, too.
Kitchen Plans Developed Now that the plumbers and electricians are starting to work on the new building, we had to finalize plans about which equipment goes where in the new kitchen, and it's been a hectic pressure to get all these decisions figured out in the best way possible. Finally, on Tuesday we met with a kitchen designer for much of the afternoon to put things in shape.
No Shabbat on Presidents Weekend, 20's-30's Shabbat on following wknd Thanks to UAlbany's week-long break over Presidents' Week - there won't be Shabbat dinner for the weekend of Presidents' Week 2/13-14 but we will be back on for 3/20 for a "Shabbat for 20's-30's" for graduate students and young professionals together with Hillel's JenX, (and undergrads who are up here are welcome too...) please spread the word among friends and colleagues, as this demographic is harder for us to get the word out to. If you are up here for Shabbat on Presidents Weekend, and are looking for services at area synagogues or home hospitality in the Albany Jewish community, please give us a call 438-4227 or Rabbi Nomi of Hillel at 489-8573*24.
Hillel & L'chaim Tabling at the CC On Monday, Tu Bishvat, Jewish New Year for Trees, L'chaim and Hillel tabled jointly in the Campus Center. Hillel was promoting a mock-voter drive ahead of Israel's anticipated elections (Tuesday 2/10) and giving out fig newtons for the fruity holiday. Shabbos House and L'chaim rolled fruit-roll-ups into roses on skewers and handed them out to lots of people, it was a big hit.
Tight Minyan, but it worked out.. On Shabbat Morning of Beshalach, when we read the Torah portion of the Crossing of the Sea and the Splitting of the Sea, we got 7 people early enough, but getting the last 3 took a while, but we finally got there with exactly ten to read the Torah. At lunch we did a little singing marathon before bentching, thanks to Danyel's song request for Who Knows One - and no one having books in front of them. It was a pleasure having Danyel and Tani visiting for the weekend.

Friday Night Welcome Baby Bluma
1/30/09
Despite a spurt of thick wet snow, there was a full house on the first Friday Night back at Shabbos House. Rabbi Mendel told a story (see Time Out for Torah) about baby Bluma's namesake, Raizy cooked up a storm despite it only being 2 weeks since Bluma's birth, and many students helped in many ways to prepare, set-up, serve, clean-up and make Shabbos dinner run as smooth as possible. Following dinner there was an Oneg with lots of lively freshmen singing, well-wishes and a big nosh spread. May we always share Simchas.
Adam & Allie's Sheva Brachos
1/27/09
The first Torah-Tuesdays of Spring '09 featured a Sheva Brachos celebration honoring the recent marriage of Adam Kofinas ('06) and Allie Newman ('07) to which many of their Albany friends attended. As is our tradition, we went around the table with each participant (aside for the freshmen and sophomores who only know them from Simchat Torah and visits) sharing warm memories and well-wishes. One student remembered this tradition from Danyel and Tani's Sheva Brachos at the start of the Fall semester, but couldn't make this event, so she wrote something down and asked a friend to share it at her turn. And because it was a Torah-Tuesdays, Rabbi Mendel shared a short learning on "The Forever Blessing" with thoughts and texts related to the "Binyan Adei-Ad" everlasting edifice blessing recited at the wedding and at Sheva Brachos.

Womens Spa for Body and Soul
1/25/09
A group of UAlbany students went with Rabbi Nomi of Hillel (it's too soon since Bluma's birth for Raizy to be out and about all afternoon) to the 4th annual Spa for Body and Soul held this year at the new Hyatt Place in Malta NY. In addition to the luncheon and workshops, the featured speaker was Rivka Slonim, co-director of the legendary Chabad House at Binghamton University, and a mentor to Raizy. Mrs. Slonim is the author/editor of two classic books for Jewish women: "Total Immersion" on Mikvah experiences & meaning and "Bread and Fire" on women's spirituality.
First Tour of 320 New Building
1/24/09
The new building is far from ready, but now that all the walls are framed and the roof-trusses are up, those who came to Shabbos Lunch came over afterwards for a tour of the new building to see the layout of the rooms, get a feel of the place. When students left for winter break there was little more than the foundation and portions of the first floor in place, and now all the framing is up, and the roof is almost ready for shingles. Check 320 Building Blog Jan 2009, scroll down to see the first picture of the building in framing..
The Minyan Miracle
1/24/09
Well, it wasn't exactly a miracle, but exciting and uplifting nonetheless. There we were in Chapel House on Shabbos morning, waiting for a Minyan, we were short two. And lo and behold, 6 Persian guys come in, crowding the chapel and making us feel like a real shul. In addition to Rabbi Mendel reading the Torah, Jon Dickens read the 3rd portion and Efraim, a graduate student from Brooklyn College up in Albany as a legislative intern read the 7th aliyah in Yemenite-style (a first for us). Manny led a Sephardic Musaf. There was a full house at Shabbos House for lunch. A lot of students got their first look at baby Bluma, who slept out in the dining room through most of lunch.
First Friday Night of Spring '09
1/23/08
The 1st Friday Night of Spring 2009 was a Hillel Dinner in the Campus Center. It's great to see everyone after break, to catch up with friends. People back from Birthright, chilling at home, away on getaways, working a little. There was a good vibe about being back. It's also good to welcome transfer students, those who were away for a semester, and those joining our community while in town on internships and programs. Rabbi Mendel came to dinner with Mushky and Moshe, Chani was away at a friend's house for the weekend, and Raizy stayed home with Sara, Bassie and baby Bluma, along with her mother, Mrs. Galperin who came up from NY to spend an extended weekend helping Raizy with the new baby and transition into the new semester.

Southern Wall in Place While the upper floor framing is already in place, the last piece to be put up was the southern wall of the Main Room which had to be built in one piece on the floor and raised by a crane. Now all the framing is complete, and it's time for the roof trusses to go up. To see all the photos check out the "320 Building Blog" for a month by month photo update.
Torah-Tuesday Topics & Schedule Ten Torah-Tuesdays are planned for the Spring 2009 semester, and the list of dates and topics are now available online, and we'll also be giving out the bookmarks. As always, you can come for one class, or come for all, each class is a subject of its own, and designed to be relevant and interesting to both advanced and beginner Jewish learners. And there's a Kosher Dairy Dinner served with each one. The first Torah-Tuesday is scheduled for 1/27, and it will also celebrate a Sheva-Brachos for Adam ('06) and Allie ('07) who are getting married on January 25th in NYC. Mazal Tov...
Bluma's 1st Shabbos Bluma was born in the wee hours of Thursday morning, and left the hospital with Raizy on Friday afternoon, in time to spend Shabbos with  us at Mendel's parents in the Albany Jewish community. On Friday, in addition to teaching and getting Raizy home from the hospital, Mendel rushed about to put together a Kiddush in honor of Bluma's birth at Shomray Torah (aka The Shteeble). On Sat Night there was an event at the Maimonides School celebrating the yartzeit of the Rambam/Maimonides with a Yemenite themed dinner and study. And on Sunday morning we came home to Shabbos House, bringing Bluma here for the first time. On the last Friday Night in January, which will be the first Shabbos House dinner of Spring 2009 (the first weekend being a Hillel dinner) we'll have a special Oneg/Farbrengen/Kiddush after the meal to welcome Bluma to the Shabbos House family.
  updated 1/15/09
Bluma joins the Rubin family Early Thursday morning (1/15/09) at 3:09am Raizy gave birth to a baby girl (at first glance she shares Chani's features). Mommy and baby are doing well, thank G-d. The same morning, Rabbi Mendel went to the morning Minyan at Shomray Torah, and named her "Bluma" at the Torah Reading, for Raizy's late grandmother Bluma Galperin who passed away earlier this Fall in Israel. We thank everyone for their well-wishes and Mazal-Tovs, on Facebook, via email and in person, we look forward to celebrating Bluma's birth with everyone as they get back to Albany for the Spring '09 semester.
2nd Floor nearly framed in... We'll have to post more pictures soon to the 320 Building Blog, as construction work progresses despite the extreme cold temperatures. Most of the upper floor is now framed, and the roof-trusses have been delivered, and will be lifted by crane and installed as soon as the upper floor framing is complete.

Chaim's 26K Run for Chai-Lifeline This is another piece of news that belongs better on our alumni page, but until we get to updating all that, it's also part of our extended Shabbos House family: Chaim Spilman ('02) will be running a 26-mile (yes, you read that right) marathon to benefit Chai-Lifeline, a Jewish organization that helps thousands of kids with serious illness - and their families, with year 'round emotional, social and financial support. Click here to support his run.
Mendel doing OK, family getting ready Thanks for everyone's concern and friendship. Mendel's surgery went well, did nearly a week of voice-rest, and will start voice-therapy soon. In the meantime we're trying to get Shabbos House in shape (paperwork, storage, kids-stuff) before Raizy goes into labor, G-d willing in a good time. The official due date is January 10th. We look forward to sharing good news soon.
School Vacation is now over True, the college winter break continues on until the 3rd week in January, but our kids go back to school tomorrow (Jan 5) for a full-day of Judaic and General Studies classes, after about two weeks of half-days (Hebrew only) and extended vacation weekends. Today they cleaned out the car and brought it to a car-wash, emptied out their book-packs... We spent Shabbos at Mendel's parents in the Albany Jewish community, good to have a weekend off, a little getaway.
Bassie's Menorah Blessings on YouTube It's a little while after Chanukah, but we posted online a video clip of Bassie saying the blessings on her Menorah, on the 8th night on YouTube. She said it so proudly and clearly each night, we couldn't resist. She's using the blue-tiled Menorah (with the good old nut bolts) that she made this year in Maimonides Nursery school.

Happy New Year
1/1/09
Happy New Year to all! The Jewish New Year of course is on Rosh Hashanah, but it does say in Psalms that "G-d reckons with the counting of nations.." Hope everyone who had celebrations did so safely and joyously, and had good memorable times with friends or family, or the huge crowds at some major celebration. What did we do? Nothing. Mostly in bed, Raizy taking great care of Mendel with pudding, jello, oatmeal, lots of drinks (no, not that kind..) comfort and concern. The kids were at Mendel's parents sleeping over for the second night. We miss them and can't wait to have them back this afternoon.
The Crazy Thing about Israel Looking at the news you'd never believe it, but speaking to some alumni in Israel, and a few students visiting there, life goes on! Of course, everyone has their eyes on the news, is full of passionate opinions, everyone knows someone in active IDF service, and more Israeli towns in the south-east are under the threat and barrage of rockets. But somehow Israelis keep on going, even when the major crisis is just a few miles/kilometers away. And that's one of the best answers to terrorism.
Lots of help toward 50% Matching Gift
12/31/08
We're very grateful to all the alumni, parents and students and friends, who despite the challenging economic situation, were very helpful in maximizing (to the best we can) the 50% matching gift opportunity that ran from May-Dec 2008. Some gave by credit-card, some gave and pledged over a span of time, some checks are still enroute, especially with holiday mail, so we'll put together a tally this coming week. While we still have a ways to go financially (both with the Building and Operating Funds) we're getting there, everyone's help really makes a difference. Thanks also to all those who have generously contributed to the Building Fund in the past, be it back in 2001 when started, and in all the years in between. It's a cumulative effort, and every bit adds up. Though this matching gift will be up in the new year, we can still use all the help we can get, whenever it works for people, and who knows - another matching opportunity may arise.
Mendel's Vocal Cord Procedure Went Well
12/31/08
After a full semester (plus part of the summer) of hoarseness (thanks to all who put up with it) and efforts with medication, some weight-loss etc, Mendel had a procedure (minor surgery) to remove a cyst/lesion on his vocal cords at St. Peters Hospital on Wednesday morning, 12/31. Thanks to Dr. Setzen's expert care, the friendly hospital staff, it went very well. Very good thing we did it, because the cyst/lesion turned out to be even larger than the video-strobe of a month ago. Mendel can't talk at all for a week, and is recuperating at home with pudding and jello, oatmeal and other soft stuff. Although it was only minor-surgery it did wipe him out some, and he's very thankful for Raizy's excellent care. The kids spent two nights at Mendel's parents (since we had to leave for the hospital at 5:30am) and they had half-days at school. Following the week of voice-rest, and after a post-op visit, Mendel's going for 2 months of speech therapy. Hopefully, after all this - G-d willing we should be back on track!
Torah-Tuesdays Spring 2008 To deal with the tension and angst leading up to the minor surgery, we distracted ourselves by relaxing, and also finalizing the coming semester's Torah-Tuesday topics schedule. Of course, most of them still need to be developed and written, but at least we have a good outline. Like every semester, it's a smorgasbord of topics and learning styles, for varied flavor. We'll post them up soon.
Spring '09 Schedule After meeting with the Hillel Staff, the L'chaim Board and coordinating with the partnering Jewish groups, we have the Spring '09 semester pretty much in place now, and should have it online soon on the Schedule Page's Google Calendar. Of course, new things pop up as events get closer, but the schedule has been pretty well kept, so you have a good idea.

Mazal Tov Mike Kashani Mazal Tov to alumnus Mike Kashani (Class of 2003) on his engagement to Sarah Leffak! May we always share Simchas and joyous occasions. Truth be told, we have to get our alumni-page current again, with wonderful announcements like these, but in the meantime, "News in the Family" is not a bad spot, since Mike (and now Sarah) is certainly part of the Shabbos House family.
Thinking of Israel Israel is once again at war in defense of her citizens, with those who do not recognize her existence, who target her civilians and continually seek to destroy her. May this campaign be a success in bringing safety, security and peace. In summer 2006 during the 2nd Lebanon War we put up a page with spiritual and physical ways to be in solidarity with Israel. The same applies today. Our prayers are with all innocent people suffering because of those who seek violence and destruction.
Thank You!
12/29/08
Our 50% matching gift opportunity for the Building Fund runs through December '08. Just a few days left now. It's remarkable how people come through even in these challenging economic times. This morning a UAlbany bus-driver stopped by the house and brought a card and a check for $100 - she enjoys watching the building go up. An alumni friend who got her first full-time job in many years called to pledge another $100. An alumni couple emailed to pledge $1,000 over the coming year. Shabbos House accepts credit-cards, if you can, please give us a call 518-438-4227 or email: mail@shabboshouse.com
Building Update
12/29/08
All the upper floor trusses are now in place. Today, they're placing sub-floor boards in place, and preparing the stubs for the front porch overhang. The upper floor walls should start going up before the New Year. About half of the crushed stone for the porous pavement parking area (toward campus, to the north of the storm-water recharge basin) is back there now.
8th Night isn't too late Most students are away on break, the campus is pretty much deserted, few cars are parked anywhere. To save utility costs, much of campus has reduced heat and power through the New Year. But a few students did remain up here working through break. On the 8th night, Rabbi Mendel was IM'ing and came across two students (in different apartments) who hadn't gone home, and did not have a Menorah. But the 8th night is not too late! Quickly we drove over with Menorahs, Candles, a Dreidels and some home-made Potato Latkes (Raizy made them on 3 nights of Chanukah this year, twice grated and once blended, for those who know the difference). The guys apologized for the trouble, what trouble!? The only trouble is we wish we knew sooner in the holiday!
Weather up here The past 2-3 weeks were cold, snowy and icy. Harsh winds, intense cold. Real winter. But towards the end of Chanukah, in fact, starting around the 25th, it got warm out of the blue - snow is melting all over, one day it was 50 degrees out.
The Rubins Albany  Chanukah Chanukah fell late in December this year, so UAlbany was on break for all of it. We kept busy with events in the local Jewish community. The first night of Chanukah was on Sunday, and the continuation of the snow storm. On Monday Rabbi Mendel went with his HS students (at Maimonides) to present a "Henry-Hudson Halfmoon Menorah" (this year marks 400 years since Hudson's voyage up the river) at Albany City Hall and at the NYS Assembly Chamber. On Monday night there was a Shlock-Rock concert in town, and a public Menorah lighting in East Greenbush, but we couldn't make either event. Tuesday Night was the annual Maimonides Raffle-Auction which we worked hard on as parent volunteers (arranging, coordinating, etc etc) which had a "cruise" theme. On Wednesday we had a family dinner at Mendel's folks, and on Thursday December 25th we went up to Mendel's brother in Saratoga, where Chabad had Kosher chinese, holiday games and a Latke Bingo. We also drove up to Saratoga for the Victorian Walk, and spent time at the Fiddler on Broadway, Saratoga Chabad's Chanukah Boutique Shop and Center.

For Friday and Shabbos we went to Mendel's parents in Albany. On Sat Night, our younger kids enjoyed toasted black marshmallows and the fireplace at Mendel's parents house, where we got to see Nachman Aryeh, their cousin, son of Devorah Leah (Rubin) and Mendy Mathless. Over the Chanukah weekend, Mushkie and Chani attended the "Jewish Girls Retreat" an overnight program held this year at the Maimonides School. Highlights of their weekend included Mushky's choir solos on Saturday Night, Chani's creative writing, and they both enjoyed snow-tubing down Willard Mountain. They had great dedicated counselors who came to Albany from New York, Toronto and elsewhere.

Most of the Chanukah Days the kids had half-days at school, we spent the afternoons cleaning-up and organizing around the house, shopping for kids stuff, and doing some crafts. Raizy made the kids colorful homemade playdough. And the computer. Moshe loves the National Geographic video clips, the kids played some games, and designed some things on MS Publisher. One or two of the days they had fun in the snow. On the night after the big ice-storm, Mendel got to work sawing the fallen tree limbs into firewood. Maybe one day we'll get a fire-pit and toast up some marshmallows.

A stormy Shabbat
12/19/08
The roads were empty and treacherous, side-roads were hardly plowed and the snow was coming down. Although more people reserved only 6 made it to the "20's-30's Shabbat" for grad students and young professionals. There was a lively discussion nonetheless, and some networking for those who haven't met each other before. It will be a while before we can do this type of Shabbat again, hopefully the next time it won't be as snowy.
  updated 12/18/08
Another storm coming, and Shabbat 20's & 30's Last week it was ice, this week looks like snow: 6-12 inches on Friday 12/19 (then more on Sunday). Finals are over, students are gone, but we planned a special Shabbat (something we can't really do in the regular academic season) for Jewish graduate students and local young professionals in their 20's and 30's living in the area - together with JenX, Hillel's program for young adults post-undergrad. Despite the storm, we're going ahead with it for those who can make it over here.
Steel Beams delivered and installed This week Kivort Steel delivered two support steel I-beams, one 60' to run underneath the 2nd floor overhang outside on the northern-side, and one 35' beam to run underneath the 2nd floor indoor overhang over the main room. They were both installed this week to allow for continuing work laying the floor trusses support system for the upper floor of the new Shabbos House. See Building Blog Dec '08 for pictures of the interior framing walls, bay windows and deck doors, and the start of trusses going up for the upper floor.
50%  Matching Fund thru Dec '08 There's a generous 50% matching gift opportunity that runs through the end of this month, December 2008, and while this is an incredibly difficult economic time for all, we extend our thanks to those who are helping us maximize the benefit of this match as much as possible. While much was raised for the new building, we still have a ways to go, before a mortgage for the remainder becomes reasonably possible. Thanks to everyone for their support - it all makes a big difference. We've been working on getting the word out on this - see also our most recent Building Update in PDF format.

Inside Walls Going Up Despite the ice-storm and cold temps the construction team has been working throughout, and now the inner framing walls on the main floor of the coat-room, lobby, bathrooms and washing-sinks, kitchen pantry, rear-stairwell are all up, with some prep work being started for the framing of the upper floor. Pictures are now updated on the Dec '08 page of the 320 Building Blog.
Maimonides Raffle-Auction 2008-9 The Rubin children all attend the Maimonides School in Albany, and Rabbi Mendel and Raizy teach there as well. Each year the school has a fundraising Raffle-Auction with a variety of prizes offered, most tickets are $5 or $10 each. If you'd like to do a Mitzvah of supporting Jewish education and have a decent shot (it's a small community, the odds are better) of winning something, check out the Maimonides Raffle-Auction 2008-9 Page online, you can use one link there to purchase tickets online and another link to download the booklet in PDF and mail in your entries. Either way, the drawings will be on Tuesday, the 23rd at the school along with a Chanukah dinner.
Minyan Trouble For the final week of the semester, we ended up with nine for the Minyan at Chapel House. Following lunch we had a decent Minyan for Mincha and used that opportunity to read the whole Torah portion we missed in the morning. As several minyaneers have graduated or will be graduating soon, we're looking for a few good men to come out once or twice a month on Shabbos mornings.
Finals Week Shabbat It was a cold night, with windy temps down in the teens, and ice-patches and fallen tree limbs all around. Many in the neighborhood were still without power (some only got in back as late as Monday) but just before Shabbos began Shabbos House and Empire Commons had power restored. We left in the last couch, so we ended up with 12 tables instead of the usual 13, but quite a nice crowd turned out even being finals week and the bitter cold weather.  It was also a weekend of farewells to graduates, to those headed to study abroad or transferring schools.
The Ice-Storm and Blackout Friday There was a big ice-storm in the Capital Region and the greater Northeast on Thursday night. Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were without power (some took nearly a week to restore). We woke up about 3am on Thursday night to not having power – and realized that all the food would go bad. Thank G-d, the freezers were still frozen solid (they stayed that way until the power went back on). But since we got turkeys after Thanksgiving, Raizy cooked up 8 of them on Thursday and they were sitting in the fridge, along with all the other Shabbos food. Being that it’s cold this time of year outside, we took everything out of the fridges and packed them in boxes (covered with garbage bags due to the freezing rain and ice, very heavy and windy storm) and put them on deck. But the turkeys! There was no point in putting them outside whole, so Raizy got to work carving them – by candlelight – by 5am, so we could get them stacked in trays and out onto the deck before it all went bad.

Then we had to figure out Shabbos. We went out and bought candles, figured out what could be served cold, and realized that the gas-stove top still worked (though the oven did not) so Raizy made a soup. There are tree limbs down everywhere. During the day the house started to get colder (the gas heat needs electricity) and with our sump-pump down, parts of the basement started to fill with water. School was out for the storm, which gave us time to work, but the kids were getting antsy (besides the car has heat), so I took them out for errands (some stores had power, others didn’t) and Raizy called that our power came on – with less than a hour left to Shabbos. The weather was brutal that night, in the teens, and its finals week, but we had a full house and it was a great Shabbos. That night we looked out and saw the most of the neighborhood was still dark. A student went around with the kids to invite neighbors, but it seems they all left due to the power outage. It's amazing that we got power back just in time for Shabbos, the last of the Fall semester with students.

Our Winter Break Plans It's customary around this time of year to ask about plans for winter break, so it's probably high time that we share the good news (for those who haven't heard or noticed already) that Raizy is due (G-d willing) around January 10th, may it be in a good time, in good health. We look forward to sharing the good news with everyone when the time comes.
Midnight Breakfast
12/8/08
On the eve of Reading Day before Finals begins, students came over for Midnight Breakfast, 10pm-Midnight breather, with french toast, doughnut holes, waffles and ice-cream and a few light films projected on the wall. Best wishes to everyone with their finals, papers and all else at the end of the semester.
Main Floor Walls Going Up It's exciting to follow the construction. The western and northern portions of the external walls on the Main Floor are now in place. The front and back stairwell walls are up, the Kitchen pantry storage area (just about the size of our current kitchen) is the first room to be framed in. Check out the Dec '08 Page on the 320 Building Blog to see pictures.

We recently mailed a Construction Update with a reminder about our 50% gift-matching opportunity which runs through the end of December 2008. Click here to view in PDF.

Shabbat Lunch with Parents and Stern College B-Ball Team
12/6/08
Who knew that Stern College had a basketball team? Well, they were up in Albany to play Sat Night and Sunday games against the Albany College of Pharmacy and Russell Sage in Troy. It was a pleasure to have them join us for Minyan at Chapel House and Lunch at Shabbos House.

Several of our long-time involved students are graduating this December with the commencement ceremonies on Sunday. It was a pleasure having the Messer and Hirsch families for Shabbos Lunch, and congratulations to Justin and Craig, to Josh Sisskind (who spoke at the graduate commencement), Gil Abada, Shimon G, and all the others celebrating their undergraduate or graduate commencements in December. Best wishes with all your future endeavors. (We do all the official goodbye ceremonies each May, and include December graduates in the festivities and gifts).

Torah Tues on Jews and Comics Given the seriousness and gravity of the Mumbai tragedy, we were wondering whether to go ahead with the "Torah-Tuesday" scheduled for the same night as the Memorial event, especially since the subject was "Jews and Comic Books." But we decided to go ahead for 2 reasons: 1) We don't like canceling events, a time of tragedy is a time to increase and not decrease. 2) Comic Books feature a lot of fictional super-heroes, and Sandra Samuel who heroically saved young Moshe Holzberg is certainly a hero.

Rob Kovach brought a diverse sampling of his extensive comic-book and graphic novel collection, and his talk went through the history starting with the golden age, the silver age, the bronze age, and the current comic book and graphic novel scene. He discussed Jews involved with the founding of the industry, illustrators, writers and marketers, as well as sharing books that have explicit (and hidden) Jewish themes or characters. There was great feedback from students, some of whom are quite the experts themselves.

Mumbai Memorial Event
12/2/08
On Tuesday, a moving Mumbai Memorial ceremony was held a Shabbos House for students and community, to memorialize the victims of the tragedy, and move forward with Mitzvot and dedication. See the Mumbai Memorial Page, which has some pictures of the event, as well as links to some of the numerous inspirational and meaningful articles and videos available online.

Memorial Planned In light of the terrible tragedy, we're arranging a memorial event for the Holzbergs and their guests who were killed at the Chabad House, among all those killed in the terrorists attacks in Mumbai, India. It will be on Tuesday evening 7:30-8:30pm at Shabbos House. The planned Torah-Tuesday "Jews and Comics" or superheroes with Rob Kovach will begin at 8:30pm with a dairy dinner.  Also see: Terror & Tragedy at Mumbai Chabad House on Chabad.org
Tragic Murder of Mumbai Chabad by Terrorists in India All the Jewish world, indeed all the world is hurting at the tragic deaths of Rabbi Gabi and Rivka Holzberg among all the victims of the horrible Mumbai attacks. The Holzberg's were the Chabad family running the Chabad House in Mumbai. They died solely for being a popular, open and welcoming Jewish address in Mumbai. They died "al kiddush Hashem". Simply put, the Nariman House in Mumbai was like the Shabbos House in Albany, but more so - he was a shochet, a mohel, every piece of food they prepared for hundreds of guests and travelers was homemade from start to finish. They selflessly and happily gave up the comforts and basic necessities of life in America in Israel to fulfill the Rebbe's vision of creating a welcoming home wherever Jews may be.

When terrorists attacked the fledging settlement of Kfar Chabad in Israel and killed five yeshiva students with blood splattering their prayerbooks, the Rebbe wrote a 3-word Hebrew telegram that read: "With continued building you will be comforted." Chabad will not give up. A new fund has been established to rebuild Chabad in Mumbai, with a new young family as the Holzberg's would have wished, as well as provide for the Holzberg's young son Moshe who turns two years old. To contribute visit: www.chabadindia.org

For additional info and statements from Chabad-Lubavitch International visit Chabad.org's Page

In addition, as the Rebbe always encouraged, may we all take upon ourselves one additional Mitzvah, or an enhanced observance of a MItzvah, in memory of the Holzberg's.

Although we did not know the Holzberg's personally, all of Chabad, and indeed all Jews are family, and there are also other connections: Raizy's cousin in Israel married Mrs. Holzberg's sister and our brother-in-law Rabbi Greenberg's eldest brother also married an aunt of Mrs. Rivka Holzberg of blessed and righteous memory.

Terror Attack and Hostage Crises at Chabad in Mumbai, India Obviously, along with people all over the world, we're worried about the terrible terrorist attacks in Mumbai India, and the fate of the Chabad Shluchim, Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holzberg who run the Chabad Center in the Nariman House which was specifically targeted by the terrorists, who as of this writing are stilled holed up in there with hostages. Thankfully, their 18-month old son Moshe got out with the Chabad House cook, but his parents fate is still unknown at this time. Their home was open to business travelers, Israeli backpackers and many others for Kosher food, prayer and study.

While there isn't much we here can do for them physically at this time, and we hope everything possible is being done by the security forces in India, it is customary in times of distress to recite chapters of Psalms in their merit: Gavriel Noach ben Freidah Blumah and Rivkah bas Yehudis. To find online Psalms visit:  Tehillim Hotline  or recite Psalm 20 on Chabad.edu/6320 (in Hebrew or English). For more on the story - simply "google": Nariman House, Mumbai Chabad (or Habad), Mumbai Jewish etc... it's all over the news, or see the Chabad.edu page on the crisis

The Great White Owl This may not make difference to many people, but it is certainly unusual. A large snowy white owl was perched on the trees between the Library and Social Sciences building, sitting there for hours.
Building Mailing Now at the printer, Shabbos House will be mailing a Building Update to alumni, parents and friends, to keep people posted on the construction progress and to remind people of the 50% Matching Gift opportunity for all gifts/pledges by the end of December 2008. It is a challenging economic time, so contributions of all sizes are welcome, and cumulatively will make a huge difference toward the building cost.
5 Days of Silence Through Thanksgiving Weekend Rabbi Mendel is on "Voice-Rest" not speaking for 5 days on doctor's advice as part of the lengthy process in getting his voice back. The hoarseness has been going on since August, we hope we can start the new semester with a renewed voice. This Thanksgiving Week is the perfect time: No Torah-Tuesdays, No Torah-Reading, No-Shabbat with students etc... BTW email, IM and facebook work perfectly fine at this time.
1st Floor Trusses Going In The engineered floor trusses were delivered and are now being installed as the first/ground floor of the new Shabbos House building, with the first-floor framing to follow. Follow the construction photos at the "320 Building Blog" with month by month updates..
Chapel House Shabbat Lunch As Rabbi Mendel and Raizy were away at the International Chabad Shluchim Convention in NY, we're very thankful to all those who came out to make the Shabbat morning Minyan, to Professor Herman Prins Salomon and his scholarly nephew Chacham Isaac Sassoon (who came up to visit) for the Torah-Reading and the Dvar Torah, and to the Hillel Staff for arranging the Shabbat Lunch at Chapel House, instead of the usual Shabbat Lunch at Shabbos House.
Moshe's Conference Alongside the international Chabad Shluchim Conference (aka Kinus), there's also a Junior Conference for 8-14 year olds, which Moshe was finally able to attend this year. One of his bunk-mates was his cousin Mendel Greenberg from Commerce Michigan, and his close friend Azriel Laber from the Capital Region. Most of his bunk-mates were from Florida and Michigan, and his counselor grew up in Las Vegas NV. They had a great time, with trips to the Jewish Children's Museum, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, and shopping on Crown Height's Kingston Avenue. The Shabbat dinners and prayers were very spirited and energized, with hundreds of kids from all over the place. He was a little homesick the first night, but got over it after that.
Intl Chabad Shluchim Convention The whole Rubin family drove down to NY for the weekend conference of Chabad Shluchim from around the globe. Thanks to the alternating arrangement with Hillel that made this possible. Nearly 3,000 Rabbis from Alaska to Australia and all points between shared ideas and inspiration at dozens of workshops, farbrengens, and the grand Banquet at NY's Pier 94 with more than 4,000 people present. Mendel caught up with many old friends, who now live in Chicago, Paris, Caracus, Beijing, California, and many other places. Lots of energy, great vibe. Raizy's Conference will be in February, and together we have Chabad on Campus family conference in the summertime.

A Few Rubin Kids Updates The kids are growing, and they need more room for their clothes, so we got another dresser and somehow found room for it, this primarily benefits Sara, and she's very excited about having new drawers. Moshe is excited that he will be attending the Junior Chabad Shluchim Conference in NY, 3 days and nights with fellow youngsters from families doing Chabad work all around the world. Moshe has begun to learn Mishna at the Maimonides school. Mushky wrote up a very nice campaign speech in her class' Presidential race (current events type thing). Chani designed a detailed model spider for Science Enrichment. Bassie has been learning up a storm about the weekly Torah portion at the Maimonides Nursery Class, if not too many people are around she won't stop talking about it.
Onion-Garlic Shabbat
11/14/08
Dr. Eric Block is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at UAlbany and an internationally recognized expert researcher of garlic and other alliums. Rabbi Mendel read in the local "Jewish World" newspaper that Dr. Block was awarded a $500K grant from the National Institutes of Health for the garlic research, and Rabbi Mnedel thought it would make a great themed Shabbat dinner, which indeed it was! Professor Block spoke about garlic in the Talmud, interspersed with tidbits of how own and colleagues research, with a humorous twist.

The menu? Garlic Bread and Challah (both from the Mt Pleasant Bakery in Schenectady) Garlic Flatbreads and Roasted Garlic Bulbs, Ceasar Salad with Onion-Garlic Croutons, Tomato-Onion Salad (a Russian thing), and Angel Hair Garlic Pasta. The mock chicken soup had lots of onion and garlic, too. For the main course we did Cornflake Crumb Chicken with Garlic and Paprika, Onion-Noodle Kugel, and a Garlic-Onion Green-Bean Medley. After all that - dessert was mint-frosted brownies and a variety of after-dinner mints!

Basement Columns Up The steel columns running the length of the new Shabbos House in two rows are now in place and the cross-beams will be installed very soon, to enable the first floor framing to begin. Some plumping preparations and work was done in the basement area.
Challah with Love
11/12/08
Challah Baking is fun, a good relaxing social time, and its a Mitzvah. Challah with Love is an especially important Mitzvah as we bake the Challah to share with seniors in the community who would most appreciate a delicious braided homemade bread. There were a lot of Challah Baking students, and they could not resist, so each took a Challah back to their rooms as well.
Jamming Night
11/8/08
Jacob Z and Yael G were great on electric guitar once they got going, to the steady rhythm by Josh S, who will be graduating with a masters this December. Although the crowd was somewhat smaller, we went through a full case of pizza, plus nearly 2 boxes of hot pretzels. And at the end of the night we did some group Israeli singing accompanied by our accomplished guitarists.
Bubbe Blumah OBM Raizy's paternal grandmother, Bubbe Blumah Galperin, passed away at the age of 97 on Shabbos Lech Lecha (11/8) in Kiryat Malachi, Israel, where she lived since emigrating from Soviet Russia in 1972. Raizy's parents were in Israel at the time to celebrate a wedding of the eldest of the Galperin grandchildren, and Raizy's father, Rabbi Galperin, stayed in Israel for the funeral and returned to NY to sit Shiva. She was an industrious woman who loved to bake and cook specialties for the joyous occasions of neighbors and family. As her husband was imprisoned and sent away to Soviet Labor Camps for "Jewish Crimes" much of the responsibility in raising the children was left to her. She was a daughter of the celebrated, legendary Chabad Chassid R' Yankel Zuravitzer, who was killed by the Soviet Secret Police. May her memory be a blessing.
Finally uploaded Sukkot Pics At Shabbos House, we live in the shadow of the Sukkah for a long time! Most of our Sukkot celebrations fell on Holiday and Shabbat, when we can't take photos, but we do have some pictures from the Sukkah Building and Take-Down BBQ's.. it's been a hectic and busy semester, sorry it took so long for these to go up online!
  updated 11/3/08
Link to Pink-Shabbat News Story Chabad.edu, the national Chabad on Campus website did a news story on Pink-Shabbat events around the country, highlighting Shabbos House with quotes from Sheryl Hoffman, L'chaim President. The photo used is actually from the Dessert Prep at the Sukkah Building BBQ, since we didn't have any photos from the Pink-Shabbat itself.
The Long Bagel Brunch
11/2/08
Well, we didn't have a minyan - at first. Over time, well over a Minyan came through, for Tefillin, bagels and lox, eggs and more. We also had a window of opportunity with a cargo van to get the wooden Sukkah boards and tent poles and tarps to a storage place, so thanks to the students who helped us load it up, and to the students who went over and helped us unload it there. It may possibly be the last time we use this specific Sukkah!
Safari-Shabbat
10/31-11/1
Why Safari-Shabbat? In honor of Parshat Noach, and the story of the ark, flood and all the animals, the L'chaim Board came up with a Safari-theme. We decked the place out with animal-themed paper-goods and tablecloths, and the menu reflected the theme as well. Wild rice, pineapple chicken, fruity salad with nuts, and decorated cupcakes with pawprints, animal crackers and lion-faces. The table-card had photos from Moshe's Animal Album Collection, and a spiritual message on the animal soul from Rabbi Mendel.

Being Friday, October 31st, we didn't think we'd have to take out all the couches, but we're glad we did. Despite many regulars being away for the weekend, and all the exciting parties going on that night, we had a pretty full (though not packed) house, and a great atmosphere for the Safari-Shabbat theme.

Torah-Tues on Age of Universe Thanks to graduate student Aron Cepler for preparing and presenting a thought-provoking "Torah-Tuesday" session titled, "Torah, Science and the Age of the Universe." Unfortunately, it was a lousy night weather-wise, but for those who attended (not a bad turnout..) it generated a lot of food for thought, in addition to the dairy dinner.
Sukkah Take-Down
10/26/08
The Sukkah is such a wonderful place and atmosphere, but its' only there for one week each year. Thanks to the few who came out to help us get it down and away. Being Homecoming Weekend, a few alumni came up for the day, some of whom stayed for an hour or two to help us get the Sukkah away. Having tall Steve Linder ('07) was especially helpful with putting the bamboo poles and Sukkah cross-beams in the Shabbos House attic. We're going to miss the nights and meals in the Sukkah, but look forward to next year!
The Pink Shabbat Lunch
10/25/08
Being the last Shabbat Lunch of October, the L'chaim Board planned a Breast-Cancer Awareness at Shabbat Lunch with a pink theme, pink foods (chraynaise, deli-roll, pink 'n purple cole slaw, strawberry ice-cream pies and more). Two student representatives Amanda and Katie of SAAC (Students at Albany Against Cancer) spoke about facts and statistics and the importance of prevention and early discovery. The table-cards had additional info and resources. Thanks to the Sharsheret organization for materials and information.
Parents and Homecoming Weekend
10/24-25/08
Hillel hosted the Homecoming Shabbat Dinner in the Campus Center Ballroom, attended by students, visiting families and alumni. Karen Hausler of the Hillel Board spoke to parents and the assembled on the vision for growing Hillel's future. Following dinner a number of parents and students came over to Shabbos House for desserts and an Oneg, relaxed discussion. Thanks to visiting parents we had a record timely Minyan on Shabbos Morning, followed by a well-attended lunch at Shabbos House, which also featured the breast-cancer awareness Pink theme, see just above.

Pictures coming.. Most of the holiday we can't take pictures, but we do have photos from the Sukkah Building BBQ, the Yom Kippur Pre-Fast and some other events in October. We look forward to posting them online soon...
Basement walls poured
10/24/08
Delayed some because of the midweek Jewish holidays in October, about 12 cement trucks rolled down Fuller Road, and over the course of about 2-3 hours poured the basement walls for the new Shabbos House. Of course we took lots of pictures, and will post them on the "320 Building Blog" on Saturday Night.
Simchat Torah Day
10/22/08
Thanks to alumni and community we had a nice Minyan for the long prayer service on Simchat Torah Day. Despite having just danced until past midnight the night before didn't keep the dedicated few from dancing some more. The last Hakafah circuit was danced outside on the construction-site - at 320 Fuller Road, hopefully we will be dancing in the new Shabbos House next year...
Thanks for a great Simchat Torah Night
10/21/08
This year's Simchat Torah crowd may have been smaller than most past years, due to the Tuesday night mid-week and mid-term scheduling, but those dancing made up for it with energy and spirit lasting past midnight. Thanks to the students who participated and gave it their all,

Though it rained on/off during the day, the rain held up at night, and we were able to use the Sukkah as well as the house (plus the tent for Atah-Horaysa). Special guests included the Sonenberg's of Guilderland, Rabbi Abba and Kids from Saratoga, Mitch Greene ('99) who hasn't missed a Simchat Torah since 1996, Allie & Adam, Danyel and Tani, Josh Rehr, and several other alumni. There was hot cider and Matzah-Ball soup in the cold Sukkah, L'chaims and beverages, hot kugels and platters of cold-cuts and breads inside. We sang songs from the Bentschers, the Torah Song and Sukkaleh Songs, Israeli songs, Carlebach melodies, Chabad Niggunim. Good times, Good times...

Tragic Death of Richard Bailey Along with the University community we mourn the tragic death of Richard Bailey, a senior at UAlbany, who was killed by gunshot on South Lake and Yates Avenue in Albany. The police are still investigating and some reward has been posted for information leading to an arrest. The University Police Department, and the Office of Student Success has made announcements and meetings to try and address the safety concerns and issues.

Updated Simchat Torah Info For more info on the Simchat Torah celebration Tues 10/21 at Shabbos House, check out the Simchat Torah 2008 Page. A good read of that page will help you understand how this night is different from all other nights at Shabbos House...
Shabbos in (and out of) the Sukkah Wow - what a full night it was! 11 tables in the Sukkah and 6 more inside the house. Though life is best inside the Sukkah on the Sukkot holiday, there simply wasn't enough room for everyone. Yet another reason to look forward to the new, bigger and better Shabbos House. It was the first very cold night in the Sukkah, perfect time for the hot apple-cider tradition. Of course, we sang the Sukkahleh Song, had traveling announcements (both inside the house and out in the Sukkah). After dinner, a dozen or two students stayed on in the Sukkah for a heart-warming farbrengen with each other and with Rabbi Galperin.

Special guests included Motti ('06) and Ilana ('07) Wein and Adam Kofinas ('06) and Allie Newman ('07). We also had a pleasant surprise to see Eric Nathanson ('08). Usually the Galperins (Raizy's family) stays for all of Sukkot, but this year they stayed through Shabbat and then traveled by bus to Toronto to spend the rest of the holiday with Rivky and Levi Gansburg who run the Chabad on Bayview in York Mills.

Great minyans this weekend - for each and every service, including a Shabbat ending Maariv.

Chol HaMoed (between Holidays) Sukkot Days The first two and last two days of Sukkot are holidays, the days between are "Chol-HaMoed" which means semi-holiday, and a traditional time for family outings. This year we took the kids and in-laws to the outlet stores in Lee MA, and the Norman Rockwell Museum in nearby Stockbridge. Otherwise we were busy cleaning up from the holiday, preparing for Shabbat in the Sukkah, shopping, shlepping, cooking..
Lulav & Etrog Shakes...
Yom-Kippur at UAlbany UAlbany gave off Thursday AND Friday for Yom-Kippur.
  updated 10/6/08
Notice Yom-Kippur Schedule If you're not headed home for the extended Yom-Kippur weekend, please take note of the revised Yom-Kippur Schedule page online. All services and break-fast are scheduled in the Campus Center (notice which services and events will be in CC 375 and which in CC Assembly Hall) and the pre-fast dinner will be at Shabbos House. Please pass the link/word along to fellow students staying up here who might not have this information.
Lulav and Etrog Sets If you want your own, you can order from various online vendors, have one sent from home, or call Rabbi Simon in Delmar (just south of Albany) at (518) 439-8280. Otherwise - there will be a couple of sets at Shabbos House, and everyone is welcome for great-shakes during the holiday prayers, over meals, or anytime during the daytime - which is the appropriate time for Lulav Shakes. Rabbi Mendel will have a set on campus at a few random times during the holiday, so if you see him come by for a shake if you'd like. For additional Sukkot Info (yes, it's coming up fast..) see the Sukkot Holiday Week Schedule
  updated 10/5/08
Lists, Lists.. This is the busy season at Shabbos House, especially with all the mid-week Jewish holidays. Yom-Kippur pre-fast is just days away, before that we have a Torah-Tuesdays, and the comes post-Yom-Kippur-Shabbat and the Sukkah Building BBQ on Sunday, and the Sukkot Holiday Week (check the schedule, and will be updated with themed festive meals soon...) begins Monday Night. Yes, it's a lot of work, expense, schlepping and cooking - but well worth it! Sukkot is a very special time at Shabbos House.
Busy Sunday Hillel had a camping/campfire trip to Liberty Ridge Farm all afternoon, with smores, hot onions, guitars and hookahs. It's a neat place out there, home one of the largest corn-mazes in this part of the country. Rubin-wise, we had two local events. The Maimonides School hosted a retro 1950's Rosh Hashanah theme for the community, we were there from about noon until 2pm (Rabbi Mendel was there from 10am setting up) and then we headed over to the new Chabad House on Seward Place in Schenectady where Mendel Rubin (Rabbi Mendel's nephew) celebrated his upshernish (traditional first haircut at age 3). Rabbi Shmuly and Laiky run the Chabad serving Union College, and the crowd was a mix of Schenectady and Albany community, Union students, and neighbors. The home-baked goods and sushi were excellent.
post-RH Shabbat Hillel hosted the Shabbat dinner in the Campus Center, pretty good crowd, but it seems that some students extended their already extended Rosh Hashanah break and haven't returned for the weekend. We did OK with Minyan on Shabbat morning, perhaps thanks to the new Kiddush provided by some of the senior students. This week we hosted the JERNY Bnot Sherut, Yael and Adva, who told a story in both Hebrew and English. Shabbat lunch filled in, and we had a surprise visit from a professor friend now on Sabbatical.
The Mini-Service Being that UAlbany was closed for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in honor of Rosh Hashanah, the vast majority of students left for the weekend, either to home or elsewhere. So Rabbi Mendel and Raizy and the kids headed downtown to the Jewish community to spend the holiday with Rabbi Mendel's parents.

On Wednesday afternoon, the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Mendel, Mushkie and Moshe, and Rabbi Shmuly (Mendel's brother doing Chabad at Union College in Schenectady) walked back up to campus for a mini-service at Shabbos House. About seven students participated, who didn't attend local services, and we had Shofar, prayer excerpts and traditional foods. Then we walked over the Indian Pond (which is being redone) for a waterside Tashlich prayer.

Concrete Footings are In Now that the concrete footings have been poured, you get a better sense of the size of the new Shabbos House, laid out on the ground. The next few weeks will be choppy for construction because of the midweek Jewish holidays, but they hope to finish pouring and spreading the stone, the underdrains, and forming and pouring the concrete basement walls by the time Sukkot comes around.
  updated 9/25/08
Excavation well underway Most of the big hole is now dug for the new Shabbos House. See the 320 Building Blog for September for some photos. We hope the rain this weekend won't mess things up too much, and that they'll be able to pour the concrete for the footings on Monday before Rosh Hashanah. But things are moving along...
High Holiday  Info Posted In addition to the calendar on our Schedule Page check our Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Pages now online, we hope to post detailed info pages for Sukkot and Simchat Torah soon as well. Sukkot and Simchat Torah are exciting times at Shabbos House, with enjoyable and meaningful celebration and atmosphere.
Mega Challah Baking
9/24/08
What a turnout for Challah-Baking! It hasn't been this well-attended in years! More than twenty students, mostly freshmen, made all kinds of Challah to take home for the holiday (unless they nibble at it sooner...) including the traditional High-Holiday rounds, 4-braids and 6-braids, and even cinnamon twists. There was a wonderful creative energy and buzz in the room.
Shofar Factory
9/24/08
Once again, the Shofar Factory came back to Campus Center just before Rosh Hashanah. Special thanks to Rabbi Shmuly Rubin, of the Rohr Chabad House serving Union College in Schenectady, for his expert and smooth running of the Shofar Factory. Many walked away with beautiful, working Shofars. It turned out to be the same day as a career fair in the Ballroom, with students scurrying by all dressed up in suits.
Some Stress in the Air Is it the financial market turmoil? Maybe for seniors. And the gloomy economy feels heavy all around. For everyone else, it's the overloading of tests early in the semester due to the double extended weekend breaks of Rosh Hashanah and Yom-Kippur. People have a lot of reading, reviews and studying for exams this week. Good luck to everyone. And good luck to the markets!
Afterlife at Torah Tuesdays
9/23/08
"Heaven, Hell and the Afterlife" generated interest and questions, with both sessions at Torah-Tuesdays well-attended and involved. Thanks to the students who asked for this theme to be addressed, and thanks to Raizy for a great dairy dinner. The source texts materials covered a range of issues and thoughts on the afterlife (including its relevance now, during life) though obviously only a sampling and not addressing all points. Moshe and Chani drew an illustration for a parable on the 4th page titled "The Visual Page." Thanks!
Minyan Walk-Ins
9/20/08
This week, old-time 320er Heshy Fried walked up on Shabbos morning from downtown Albany's Jewish community with a friend and fellow hiker name Yoel, and they made our Minyan! In addition, Yoel knew the Torah-reading, so he did the layning and relieved Rabbi Mendel, especially appreciated since Rabbi Mendel still doesn't have his voice back.
Shabbat Inside & Out
9/19/08
Thank G-d for the good weather, and the good students who don't mind the crowded seating arrangements at the current Shabbos House. This week we had 12 tables inside and another 3 outside on the deck. It's beautiful that we come together as a Jewish campus community on Friday Nights. There were quite a few announcements, all made at the doorway, so both inside and outside could hear.
Packets Packed, plus Yiddish learned At Torah-Tuesdays we played an old Yiddish Apples-to-Apples game that Rabbi Mendel designed (for Torah Tuesday a few years back). As we made the rounds people picked up a few Yiddish nouns and adjectives. Also that night, students assisted with packing 2,000 holiday packets, with a little card (with holiday info) and Red-Apple and Caramel-Apple flavored Jelly-Belly beans for a sweet new year! These were later distributed in all the Quad cafeterias.
Cornerstone Ceremony Update & Photos We now have pictures online and an update of the Cornerstone Ceremony on Sunday, 9/14/08. The weather was sunny, hot and beautiful despite a stormy forecast, and the event was well-attended by a nice mix of students, alumni, community and neighbors. See the link for the whole story. We're looking forward to a video of the event taken by the University Photo Service - when we get it back, we'll post the link.

Work toward  Cornerstone The Cornerstone Ceremony event will be this coming Sunday, and there's quite a bit to do in preparation. Getting the actual stone (we picked a beighish, pinkish limestone, with blue-gray engraved lettering), trying to figure out a souvenir, now we have blueish river rocks to be painted with the Shabbos House logo, we got house and heart and star shaped cookie cutters by mail to make logo-shaped cookies, we went around with postcard invites to nearby neighbors to invite them (and did the same to media-outlets with email), because of a slight chance of rain, we're setting up the Simchat Torah tent in the Shabbos House backyard. We're preparing some kind of set-up at the construction-site, planning, shopping and preparing food for the students and community, and even some alumni turnout. We look forward to seeing you there!!
Danyel & Tani's Wedding
9/7/08
Early Sunday morning we drove down to Far-Rockaway's "White Shul" where Danyel Goldberg married Tani Klein. Rabbi Mendel officiated, all the Rubin kids were decked out in black and white, and little Moshe helped carry the marriage documents around. The Albany crew (both alumni and current students) added much spirit and liveliness, and we look forward to hosting the newlywed couple for a Sheva Brachos dinner here at Shabbos House on Thursday, September 11th. We have to get around to posting photos.
Alumni Baby Boys We should get our alumni news page to be current again, but in the meantime, we're excited about the recent births of baby boys to Jason and Kimberly (Green) Mayer ('98) and to Chaim ('02) and Stephanie Spilman. We would have love to attend both Brisin, but it just couldn't work out. Chaim and Stephanie moved to the DC area and we weren't able to make that trip this time. Mazal Tov to both families, both of whom have been incredibly helpful and involved with Shabbos House and Jewish life at UAlbany, may they have much nachas and good health and happiness from these newborn boys.
The reason to build
9/5/08
Friday Night 9/5 was packed like crazy in little Shabbos House. People kept coming in, people kept squeezing tighter on the benches, some tables had two people on each end. Amazing. The Rubin kids and some helping students hung out in the kids bedroom. Both air-conditioners were on full-blast, but it did little good, the air was so hot and thick, and - well, it's a great problem to have, but we really look forward to the new place next Fall, with ample room for everyone, and plenty of space to hang out and enjoy Shabbat together. Thanks to the students for enjoying (and creating!) the atmosphere despite the squeeze and heat.
First Week in September The Sunday Shabbos House Bagel Brunch had to be rescheduled from Sunday to Monday, due to a local Barr-Mitzvah the Rubins had to attend, and the Monday Bagel Brunch didn't yield a Minyan, though some new students came and we had a good time. The 2nd "Torah-Tuesdays" of the semester (9/2) was about "I am to my Beloved" from Song of Songs. This was the first class that Mendel actually recorded for alumni listening, but didn't have a chance yet to upload, transfer and post. Soon, soon... The Hillel Lounge Night on Wednesdays served Sundaes in the Hillel Office, and the first FYSH event (arranged by Hillel Program Associate Arielle Branitsky) was a scavenger hunt all around campus, with clues set-up at different locations. Shabbos House was one of the stops. People here got clues to head over the bus-stop at the RACC, now called SEFCU Arena.

Rabbi Mendel Letters Sabbath observant? Please email Rabbi Mendel if you need a letter for a "religious-key" to be used instead of a swipe-card on Shabbos. Also, this year Sukkot Holidays fall smack in middle of the week. Please let your professors know if you will be unable to take a test or do a lab on that day - ahead of time. Professors do appreciate the lead time. Email Rabbi Mendel if you need a letter explaining the Jewish holiday schedule. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are no problem, since SUNY Albany gives off for those Jewish holidays.
First of Fall '08 Torah-Tuesdays We started off the year exploring selected Talmudic texts telling the stories of Rabbi Akiva's life, teaching and the time he lived in. The upcoming topics are listed on the calendar on Schedule Page, click on the Torah-Tuesday entries for that night's topic. Or visit our Torah-Tuesday page for the Fall '08 list of topics at a glance. We also have a green bookmark for handy reference - but that you have to get in person.
New - Hot Breakfasts at Dutch Kosher There's been an upgrade at Dutch Kosher Dining, they're now offering hot Kosher breakfasts, made to order. We hope the UAS and Chartwells efforts in improving the Kosher Dining experience will pay off in increased attendance at meals, and eventually more sign-ups on the meal-plan. We're also appreciative of the gesture to have Kosher boxed-lunches at the Fresh-Fest BBQ on State Quad. The on-campus Kosher meal plan is a vital pillar of Jewish Life at SUNY Albany, and all efforts to support and bolster are much appreciated.
Fresh-Fest on State Quad
8/24/08
Once again this year Student Association hosted a big block party, this time in the courtyard of State Quad, called "Fresh-Fest" with opportunities for freshmen and transfer students to walk around and get to know various student groups, clubs and opportunities to get involved on campus. Special for this year, Chartwells offered Kosher box-lunches - a much appreciated first. Take a peek at the Jewish tables this year.
Cornerstone Ceremony Updates Check out the Cornerstone Ceremony Page for info and updates on the September 14th event at the construction-site. We try to keep the 320 Building Blog Pages current as work continues on the site. It will be an exciting year as we keep watching the progress continue.
Freshmen Move-In Weekend
8/22-25/08
Welcome (back) to UAlbany! This year we had a larger Freshmen attendance on Friday Night than in years before, and quite a few fine transfer students as well. We look forward to many good times together. This year RA's were instructed to excuse students asking for Shabbat services from the move-in weekend mandatory floor meetings and ceremonies. Student leaders led walking groups from State and Indian Quads, and we enjoyed a great Shabbos dinner together.

Despite the fact that many students didn't move in before Sunday, we had a nice Minyan on Shabbat morning, including a nice freshmen contingent. Special thanks to these freshmen for jumping into Jewish life at Albany, and making a difference on their very first weekend up here! We also hosted a small Seuda Shlishit for students before the end of Shabbat.

UAlbany Hillel hosted a kick-off / welcome-back BBQ at Chapel House, on Monday the 25th, first day of classes. Quite a crowd came out, good to see old faces and new. While the Rubin kids came out to the BBQ, Raizy and Mendel were back at Shabbos House catering a 45th anniversary party for people in the community who wanted a Kosher dinner, and it held at Shabbos House.
