Monday 3/9/09: Megillah, Masquerade & Purim Carnival
Purim 09! An exciting evening in the UAlbany Campus Center Ballroom

It was a great event, the first Purim Carnival in the CC Ballroom, with approx 250-300 students in attendance throughout the evening. Thanks to the L'Chaim Board, Sheryl Hoffman President, the many student groups who participated and ran booths, UAlbany Hillel for their co-sponsorship and for arranging for the AvodaArts actors (who ran a pre-Megillah Red Carpet Special and also judged the masquerade contest), and who helped with set-up, schlepping and clean-up, all who came in costume, and everyone who participated and contributed to the festive atmosphere.

Thanks to Rachel and the Party Warehouse (on Fuller Road) for the balloons and decor at the Carnival. Rachel is holding Baby Bluma at the entrance to the Campus Center Ballroom and the Purim Carnival.
Justin, Shoshana and Mushky at the Lollipop booth. They all had great flavors, but only a few had colored ends.
Moshe is enjoying watching Alexus go through the "Where's Waldo" books with a magnifying glass. He knows where to find Waldo on each and every page. Eric, Isaac and Marc, all seniors Class of 2009, standing in front of Hillel's "FYSH FOR FYSH" booth.
The brothers of AEPI ran a blackjack table (for fun, not money) to try to beat the dealer: Alon on left and Kenny on right.
Eric Tabache and Adam Bakhash are the first to dress up in velcro suits and try to the Off-the-Wall bounce. Cookie Monster (aka Lauren) meets a nice Japanese girl from Brooklyn named Mushkie.
The Megillah Reading breaks the Fast of Esther - so we had some bagels, shmears, Hamantasch Fondue and Cotton-Candy.
Rabbi Mendel with some happy goldfish winners IDF chums fresh from service (ok.. freshmen).
Ruach's Sand-Art Booth was a big hit, well before the end of the Carnival all 100 of their glass bottles were filled with colored sand by event participants.
The OCF (Orthodox Christian Fellowship) group ran a challenging soda contest booth, which culminated in a grand 2-liter bottle soda race. Michael in green joker wig was the winner (he also won the Latke Eating Contest last time we ran it).
A Happy Flower Girl from Upstate NY L'Chaim President Sheryl Hoffman who arranged the whole carnival together with Ashley Shirazi, the consultant and chief assistant chef for the Pre-Purim Persian Shabbat dinner.
Happy that it is Purim! Jen in the Turtle Hat

Purim is a joyous holiday that celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman’s plot of annihilation in ancient Persia, as told in the scroll of Esther, read on that day. In that spirit, the L’chaim Student Group, hosted a masquerade carnival to generate a joyous and cheerful atmosphere of campus unity. This year’s theme is “Where’s Waldo?” with the meaningful tagline: “Where you’re never lost in the crowd” highlighting the value of each and every individual. Our first Purim carnival was in 2007, and now in 2009 we expanded the celebration, and extended invitations to all campus groups to participate. We hope this can become an annual tradition at UAlbany. For more info about Purim Holiday see VirtualPurim.com. For additional Purim events at UAlbany see the UAlbany Purim 2009 Page.
