Cornerstone
Dedication Ceremony |

We now have
pictures online and an update of the
Cornerstone Ceremony on Sunday, 9/14/08. The weather was sunny, hot
and beautiful despite a stormy forecast, and the event was well-attended by
a nice mix of students, alumni, community and neighbors. See the link for
the whole story. We're looking forward to a video of the event taken by the
University Photo Service - when we get it back from them, we'll post the link.

Excavation of
Building Begins |

This southeastern corner is the first
to get done. Nearly completed storm-water recharge basin is partially
visible in the background. The depth of the hole deepens as the
excavation proceeds westward, the land gradually slopes higher toward
Fuller Road. |
|
|

Trucks keep coming and going all day. Some haul away
earth for use at other sites, others bring gravel/crushed stone to
create the bed for the building footings and floor. |
|
|
 |
|
|
As earth is removed and
trucked away, a layer of gravel stone is placed on the base surface as a
sub-foundation to the building's footings. The bulldozer sits inside the
hole, to spread the stone evenly to the accurate depth required. The
hole being dug is slightly larger than the actual house itself, to allow
for room to build the concrete footings and wall, and to allow for
concrete piers to support the 2nd floor overhang on the north side and
the window extensions on the south side. |
|
|

Getting there, but not there yet. The
hole has to reach further forward toward Fuller Road to be ready for the
masons to come in and lay the footings. |

Concrete Foundation
Footing |

Continuing to work on the
wooden forms as concrete is pumped in long extended arm of pump truck.

Trucks in waiting on Fuller Road, one at a time they
feed into the green concrete pumper truck. |

Pumping concrete at
southwestern corner. |

Notice on south side,
triangular forms to support bay windows, square forms will be window
wells for lower level. |
|
|

Not much room to maneuver...

Pumping on the southern wall.

|

Completed footings give a
better idea of the size of the new, bigger and better Shabbos House.
Note that extensions on left support 2nd floor overhang (first floor
does not extend that far north) and triangular and square extensions on
right are for lower level window wells and main level bay windows. The
front raised concrete row is to support the front entrance covered
porch.
The footings were
completed just in time before the start of Rosh Hashanah 5769 / 2008.
