Alumni Reunions

Shabbos House / UAlbany
Alumni Visits July 2008

In addition to the annual NYC Summer Alumni Reunion, and the 2008 reunion on July 27th, and the occasional visits of alumni back at Albany, we've recently started to arrange for alumni visits at home or at work, to catch up, be in touch with alumni - now that years are passing, and its harder to keep in touch with the growing number of great friends we've made at Shabbos House.

Not all visits are pictured below. We also saw Dave S. ('01) and Sarah K. ('01) in Newark, sitting around the refreshing fountain outside the building where they work, we stopped by Joel F's ('00) Mail 'n Pack store on Ave M. And we visited families in Long Island and Queens.

Mike L. ('05 & '07) came up to Albany with Rachel S. ('08) for a Shabbat visit before we headed down to the reunion and week in NY. Rachel works as an educator in the New York Tenement Museum, so she brought books from their gift-shop for the kids. Here they're enjoying a read on the couch just before Shabbat.

Nicole H. ('01) is now a speech pathologist and does amazing therapy work with kids. We also got to see David R. ('00) during the same get-together in lower Manhattan. Magz and Mendel go back a long way, but haven't seen each other in quite some time! Magz is working in a law-firm for a long time now, and is now working on Holocaust restitution claims.
We met Justin H. ('01) in a small, pretty park on 46th street near where he works in a firm which specializes in real-estate investments. Across the street from the park is Moishe's Felafel Stand, complete with a Hand-washing Sink for Bread! A timely picture for our "Torah-Tuesdays" class "The Handwashing Ritual" this Fall '08.
The subway ride to and around Manhattan turned out to be a lot of fun for the kids. Little Sara spotted her first - we managed to meet newlywed Ita on the Fulton Street platform.
It was great seeing Marc H. ('00) and his two daughters, his wife Ronit (also an Albany alum) was in her ninth month with a 3rd when we visited. Bassie enjoys a banana on a bench in middle of Broadway near 86th Street, as we enjoy some time with Allie N. ('07) near her work and home.
Rabbi Mendel and Rani F ('01) soon to finish his residency as an OB-GYN. Rabbi Mendel with Seth M. ('02) and Mitch G. ('00)
Rabbi Dan R. ('90) remembers Rabbi Mendel Rubin as a young teenager visiting Shabbos House. Rabbi Dan was an active student leader at Shabbos House and in the Jewish campus community who later attended Yeshivat HaMivtar in Israel and later Yeshiva University. We had a great time visiting him and his family and learning about Shabbos House and Jewish Life in the late 1980's.
Bassie and Sara enjoy themselves on the swingset (and trampoline!) in the backyard of the home of Rabbi Dan R. ('90) and his family. We also got a taste of West Hempstead's Wing Wan Kosher Chinese.
Both Moshes, both eight! Bassie is excited to hold Katie, daughter of Dan L ('04) and Jenni.
Dan L. hands Moshe a gecko to hold... Moshe is thrilled! (understatement).
In addition during the summertime we like to do family outings and activities, to compensate for the many evenings and times that the kids give up for Shabbos House events and work during the hectic academic calendar year... so on Tuesday, we took the kids to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens (free on Tuesdays) and the Prospect Park Zoo ($2 for kids ages 3-12).. Plus we ate in Pizza Shops, enjoyed Chinese and other Kosher eating-out experiences we don't have in Albany!
The kids were excited about this multiple mirror effect at Hunki's Pizza Shop in Plainview NY.
On a rock-wall in Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Bassie grows a turtle shell!
At the Prospect Park Zoo there's a jump length estimate of various animals. Bassie just ran along...
